2020-01-26 [2.3.0.76] ADEN HE Round Incorrect HE Filler

Weapon affected:

Aden Cannon

Aircraft affected:

Swift F.1, Swift F.7, Hunter F.1, Hunter F.6, Hunter FGA.9, Javelin F.A.W Mk.9, Harrier GR.1, Harrier GR.3,  Jaguar GR.1, Lightning F.6 and any other aircraft using Aden cannon.

Problem:

Currently in game Aden cannon have an explosive mass of 27g of RDX/TNT as shown from the game files, fig.1. This is incorrect. Two types of Aden explosive rounds as laid out in '30mm Ammunition and Fuzes (Aden Gun), General and Technical Information', front page fig.2, should be used.

These are:

High Explosive Mk.3Z with 56g of Torpex 5, fig.3. Diagram fig.4.

High Explosive Mk.5Z with 48g of Torpex 5, fig.5. Diagram fig.5.

Mk.3Z was used up until the date of the report, being February 1970, after which it was being replaced with Mk.5Z with a greater detonating cap charge as shown in fig,6.

Recommended solution:

All current British aircraft with ADENs, with the exception of the Harrier GR.3, were introduced before 1970. As such, the current explosive rounds for Adens should be replaced with the Mk.3Z round with the possible exception of the Harrier GR.3 which could alternatively be given the Mk.5Z. This would mean increasing the current explosive mass for Aden HE rounds from 27g to 56g as well as changing the explosive from RDX/TNT to Torpex 5, a more energetic explosive. This would more than double the Aden HE explosive mass to reach its historical level.

More aircraft could get the Mk.5Z round:

  • Harrier GR.1 - Entered service in 1969 so would still be in service after 1970
  • Harrier GR.3 - As you said entered service after 1970
  • Jaguar GR.1 - Entered service 1974
  • Lightning F.6 - In service until 1988

Also those aircraft served for after 1970 it is logical that they would have used the Mk.5Z round when stocks of Mk.3Z were expended.

Cheers guys. Nice catch @strv122 they actually look very very similar. @Flame2512 the doc does say that 5Z will be going into production so likely that they would have had access to both 3Z and 5Z for some time. They are very similar, to be honest I would not be fussed if everything got 3Z but thats up to the devs.
