Fwd 2020-09-05 [1.101.0.46] Wrong US naval rockets for Higgins 78ft PT-200

 Share

2 US PT boats are equipped with rockets: Higgins 78ft PT-200 and Elco 80ft PT-565.

Both are equipped with a Mk 50 rocket launcher:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PT_boat#Gunboats

https://eugeneleeslover.com/USNAVY/CHAPTER-11-B.html

https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/attachments/motor-torpedo-boat-jpg.353607/

The Higgins 78ft PT-200 lists the 4.5-inch (114mm) M8 rocket as ammunition. (https://wiki.warthunder.com/M8)

However, this rocket can't be fired from a Mk 50 rocket launcher. https://maritime.org/doc/launchers/cat-0165.htm

It is fin-stabilized and was only fired from aircrafts and the T34 Calliope.

PT boats were equipped with 5-inch (127mm) spin-stabilized rockets. Like it is the case the Elco 80ft PT-565 with the Mk 7 warhead.

I suppose the 4.5-inch M8 was confused with the 5-inch Mk 8 for the Higgins 78ft PT-200.

The 4.5-inch M8 should be replaced by the 5-inch Mk 8 rocket. See the links provided for the characteristics of the Mk 8 warhead:

https://maritime.org/doc/ordnance/pg172.htm

http://michaelhiske.de/Allierte/USA/OrdnancePamphlets/OP1664/Volume01/Part02/Chapter05/Section04/Section04_11.htm

Additional info for the fuzes, if needed:

Mk 7: https://bulletpicker.com/pd_-mk-100-mods-0-2.html

Mk 8: https://bulletpicker.com/bd_-mk-31.html

Mk 8: https://bulletpicker.com/ad_-mk-44-mod-1_-2.html

Also, the correct name of the 127mm rocket is 5-inch S.S.S.R. (Spin-Stabilized Surface-fired Rocket), followed by the version of the warhead (Head Mk 7, 8 or 10).

https://eugeneleeslover.com/USNAVY/CHAPTER-11-B.html

That's why I propose to rename the rockets in-game as:

- 5-inch SSSR Head Mk 7 (for the 127mm Mk.7) for the Elco 80ft PT-565

- 5-inch SSSR Head Mk 8 (instead of the 114mm M8 currently) for the Higgins 78ft PT-200

Thanks for reading.

As of 1.97.1.91, the problem is still active.

I looked for additional documents. The 5-inch surface rocket can be found in both documents:

  • Templar_ changed the title to [1.99.0.14] Wrong US naval rockets for Higgins 78ft PT-200

I found an additional source from the Library of Congress:

The title of the book is "Rocket and underwater ordnance"

Chapter 20.2 "5.0-IN. Spin-Stabilized Rockets"

The relevant section is from page 221 to 229 (page numbering from the website)

https://www.loc.gov/resource/dcmsiabooks.rocketunderwater01unit/?sp=221

I extracted the relevant scans from the Library website. Those are pages 199 to 207 (page numbering from the book). You can download them here:
