OTO Melara - Leopard 1A2

At the end of the sixties the General Staff of the Italian Army was to replace the old and slow M47 tanks were taken into considen se European tanks like AMX 30, Chieftain Mk1, Leopard 1, Stridvagn 103 and Vickers Mk1. Leopard 1 was chosen because it had excellent mobility, firepower and could shoot NATO ammunition. At the end of the sixties the General Staff of the Italian Army was to replace the old and slow M47 tanks were taken into consideration some European production tanks like AMX 30, Chieftain Mk1, Leopard 1, Stridvagn 103 and Vickers Mk1. Leopard 1 was chosen because it had excellent mobility, firepower and could shoot NATO ammunition. The first 200 specimens Leopard 1A1 were delivered from Germany to Italy in 1971, these were not enough for the needs of the Italian Army it was therefore taken the decision to produce the Leopard ln Italy, the OTO Melara (which already produced under license the M60A1) was commissioned to produce the new version "Leopard 1A2" which was different from the previous one version, in fact this version has a reinforced turret cast in stronger metal alloys and night vision with image intensification for the commander e the driver. From 1974 to 1979 OTO Melara produced 816 Leopard 1A2 versions including 720 in the MBT version which became the most important vehicle of the Italian Army of that period, laying the foundations for the rebirth of the design and production of tanks in Italy such as the OF40, Centauro and C1 Ariete. Italy was the 2nd user in the world of Leopard after Germany. For all these reasons I believe that the Leopard 1A2 produced by OTO Melara can enter the Tech Three Italian and it is also easy to add because the differences with the German Leopard 1 already in play are minimal.

Suprised that Italy still has no Leopards in the tree despite having them put into service for a long time.

It would be unique since Italy never used it xD.

Another problem is that the Italian leopard 1a2 did not have stabilizers or skirts.

The Italian Army had 120 Leopard 1A5, who had an operational job in missions in Bosnia and Kosovo. It is not a problem if the Leopard 1A2 does not stabilize it.

Actually, they bought 120 leopard 1a5 surplus turrets. They had 120 leopard 1a2s with leoaprd 1a5 turrets, they did not have any complete 1a5s. Idk if you meant to say this or confirm they had actual 1a5s. They just mismatched the 1a5 turret and 1a2 hulls, so they were not really the same 1a5 that you would see in the German or (if there was one) Canadian tech tree. This hybrid leopard 1a2/1a5 could be a good addon.

Yes, the hull was from 1A2 and the turret from 1A5, the most important things of this upgrade are the thermal visor and that had APFSDS DM33 the same as the Centauro Romor.

Dose somebody know at which br the Leo 1a2 and the Leo 1a5 are gonna be, 8.3 and 8.7?

Both should be implemented in the tech tree.

The Italian Leopard 1A2 is similar to the German Leopard 1, same shells and same gun without stabilizer, so their BRs can be the same.

The Leopard 1A5 also has APFSDS DM33 shells (the same as the Centauro ROMOR) has turret with additional armor, thermal sights,

LWR, stabilized gun L7A3 L52 105mm, its BR could be 8.7 / 9.0

Leopard 1A2 would be a good back-up for the OF-40 and the rest of Italy's 7.7 and 8.0 line-ups if it truly is unstabilized. Functionally just another Leopard 1 then.

Conflicting information from the comments here, so I'm not sure if this Leopard 1A2/1A5 Hybrid is stabilized.

If it isn't, it would fit at 8.7 alongside the OF-40 Mk.2A (as it would be quite comparable to the AMX-30 BRENUS as an unstabilized thermal MBT at 8.7) and would create a small 8.7 line-up.

If it is, it would work at 9.0 alongside the Centauro ROMOR and OF-40 MTCA.

Would not be surprised if they added Italians Leo 1A5 as a new high rank Prem tank.

Since it has thermal sights, LWR, stabilized gun.

Seems like they are going to add High rank prems with those for every nations. At least IF they can find vehicles that has them.

I know there is OF-40 Thetis/ Mirabilandia OF-40. But i prefer to have that in the tree.

But 100% sure one of them will be a prem tank.

Tanks such the Leo 1A2/A5, M60A1, Dardo IFV, Freccia, Puma AFV, Centauro, Ariete should always be in the Tech Tree and not as Premiums, the reason is because the were used in big numbers and they played an important role in the Italian army.

A possibile high tier prem tank could be the Leonardo M60A3 or the Hitfact or the Spanish Centauro.

I hope not or it will be another M60A1 case, when the most widely used tank remains left behind the paywall. More than that Italy severely needs all possible options from 9.0 to 9.7.

I think 1A2 can be 8.0 (if it gets apfsds) and 1A5 will be at least 9.0, but as it is in the Italian tree (better average player = boosted statistics) it won't be lower than 9.3 (or it will have enormous repair cost).

Leonardo M60A3 could be a nice high tier prem.

I just want to see OF-40 Thetis/ Mirabilandia OF-40 in the tree.

But i'm afraid that they will make it a expensive high tier prem.

But guess we just have to wait and see what Thermal equipped vehicle they will add to Italy :)
