HMS TERROR

The history

The HMS Terror was a Erebus class monitor, sister ship to HMS Erebus and laid down in 1915, being launched and commissioned in 1916. The Erebus class monitor were a pair of monitor gun ships desgined during WW1 these monitors were desgined to to provide fire support for larger ships and to aid in shore bomb bardment. The Terror is significant for the role she played in the British North Africa campaign prior to being sunk. The date is 17th of January 1941 operation compass is in full swing and British forces are nearing the Italian controlled  port of Tobruk the monitor Terror has been assigned with a force of cruiser's and destroyers to assist in the bombardment and securing of the port. Prior to engaing the port the weather turned resulting in the operation being delayed 24 hour's, but on the night of 20th-21st the British forces attacked laying waste to the meager Italian defences which put up little fight. She then returned during the day of the 22nd after the port had been seized. After the the capture of Tobruk she was used as a water carrier to bring water to the British forces who were dangerously close to out stretching there supply line. After this she was assgined to strengthen the defences at the port of Benghazi. The next month on the 22nd she suffered the most damage she had so far from German air attack, this resulted in the near to return to Tobruk where the air deffence was better to under go repair, despite her damge she was sustaining good speed until on the 23 she was attacked again by JU 88, no direct hits were scored but the attack exaserbated the existing damage an resulted in the ship flooding, despite the best efforts of he escorts to save her by towing her the rest of the way she sank of the coast of North Africa on the 23 of Feb 1941at 0420 hours position 32º59'N, 22º32'E, corresponding with 15 nautical miles north-west of Derna. The loss of the terror was a sever blow to the forces capability and she was the largest ship by displacement to be sunk by JU 88's in the med.

2*BR 3in 40cal 12pdr 12cwt QF PI PI* Single

8 × 0.50 in (12.7 mm) Vickers machine guns (2x4)

Postion in game

This ship would operate as Brittans second top of the line ship, her main armament may be astounding but she lacks AA protection or adequate anti-small vessel protection, she's also slow and big, these factors will ballance the ship preventing her from being drastically over powered but the main armament will provide effective means of taking out the thick belted German cruisers and destroyers so think of a bit like a tank destroyer for naval combat.

If Gaijin is going to get class trees, something like monitors before the battleships, perhaps even before such things like HMS Dreadnought, this could very well be fun.

She looks like a worthy competitor. Apart from her turret, the top deck seems to be quite susceptible to shrapnel damage from near-misses.

Yeah she has a big vunerability to pluging fire and Small boat attack.

Also updated armament Noticed that in all pictures it has 8*4" QF Mk I/II PI singles's not two as shown in the origonal drawings.

i still love this suggestion. monitors are just the most bizarre idea of a ship type. take an armored cruiser, and just plant the biggest beast of a cannon your navy has on hand on top a monolithic barbette.

Here is a detailed armour breakdown for the ship, all the stuff you see in the parentheses is from a 1940 rearmouring.

Do keep in mind that that 6" tower under the main gun turret didn't stick around for long. On Erebus it got replaced with various AA mountings throughout its career but I don't know if the same happened for Terror or if they just kept it empty like I've seen in some photos.

I have similar armour profile drawings for just about all of the big gun monitors used by the RN in WWI and WWII btw.

I'm not sure about Terri some of the photos definitely have the tower but other don't it was probably removed in the 1939 refit.

Erebus lost hers in a 1918 refit and I have seen an image of Terror from 1933 missing it as well, so I would assume it probably lost it at around the same time or maybe slightly later than Erebus at the most.

It was supposed to act as a conning tower from what I read, but it was quickly found to be almost entirely useless on both ships.

This ship and others like it is the epitome of a glass cannon.  Under the right circumstances and utilized properly, it'll wreck anything it faces from beyond the range of any form of retaliation except from air attacks (or artillery strikes called in by small boats).  Otherwise, it'll be the one getting wrecked (particularly if a smaller ship manages to close to torpedo range).

Yep.

Oh, and I should also note that in addition to HMS Terror, HMS Erebus (which provided fire support on D-Day and survived both World Wars) could also be added, maybe as a premium vessel (in case you want to have two of these things in your lineup for when one of them inevitably dies from being artied, dive-bombed, or just gets sunk by a cheeky torpedo boat that you didn't see coming in time)

A late war Erebus would have a substantially better AA armament than Terror had when it was she was sunk.
