How to change aircraft loadouts in War Thunder

Before a match

To change the loadout of an aircraft before the start of a match, the player must press on the loadout icon they wish to change and select the desired option. This may be done in the modifications menu of an aircraft before a match, or during the spawn menu once a player is in battle. The modifications menu allows the player to choose ammo belts (offensive belts, turret belts, or gun pod belts) and ordnance (secondary weapons - these include bombs, rockets, torpedos, ATGMs, missiles and gun pods), whilst the spawn menu allows the player to set camouflages, user skins, gun targeting distance, vertical targeting (yes/no), bomb activation distance, and fuel amount, in addition to ammo belts and ordnance.

During a match

It is also possible in certain cases to change the aircraft loadout during a match. To accomplish this task, the player must land the aircraft on an operational airfield and then proceed to rearm and repair. Once this is done and the aircraft has respawned at the end of the runway, the player must bail out of the vehicle to access the spawn menu. Bailing out of the aircraft is, by default, done by holding down the “J” button for over 3 seconds. Note that bailing out without having repaired and rearmed your aircraft on the airfield will result in losing your aircraft. It is safest to not touch anything before bailing out once your aircraft has respawned.

The aircraft has been reloaded and repaired. Once it has respawned at the end of the runway, the player can bail out to change the loadout.

The aircraft can now be respawned with the new loadout to take off from the airfield.

Attention:

  • Changing aircraft loadouts in this manner during a battle is only possible in Air Realistic Battles, Air Simulator Battles, Air Enduring Confrontation, as well as changing helicopter loadouts in Helicopter Enduring Confrontation.
  • In the case of Air Arcade Battles, the player will be able to respawn any aircraft of their lineup from the aerial spawn. The aircraft that was landed will be able to respawn and will not be counted as a death (so no repair cost).
  • In the case of Ground Arcade Battles, the lack of an airfield and the one minute time limit prevents any attempts at changing aircraft loadouts.
  • In the case of Ground Simulator Battles, the player will be returned to the spawn menu and will have the choice of respawning an aircraft or a ground vehicle. The aircraft that was landed will be able to respawn and will not be counted as a death (so no repair cost).
  • In the case of Ground Realistic Battles, Naval Arcade Battles and Naval Realistic Battles, attempting to do this will cause the player to leave the aircraft and will require additional spawn points to spawn in another vehicle. However, this will not appear as a death on the kill feed and the player will not be required to pay the repair cost of the vehicle. This is the case for both the player aircraft option and the random fighter/bomber aircraft option in Naval Battles.

Uses

Changing the loadout of an aircraft before a battle is useful to have the most appropriate options for the player's intentions. For example, a player seeing that they will be playing on the Norway map may change their bombs to torpedos to go for ships. Similarly, a player spawning on the Boulogne-sur-Mer map may take a larger fuel amount due to the long distances.

Changing the loadout of an aircraft during a battle is useful as well, due to the ever changing aspect of battles. For example, the last enemy player might be in an unknown location and the player’s team is losing due to an inferior number of ground targets. Rearming bombs or rockets at an airfield will thus allow aircraft with such capabilities to destroy ground targets and turn the battle into their favour.
