Rptd: SOMUA S.35 frontal armor, i did measure it.

Its been a while now, im trying to tell the Devs, the Somua S.35 does not have the correct frontal armor, most of the datas were saying 40mm to 47mm front, sometimes 57mm, i already post a bug report regarding that with the feedbacks of one of the technical adviser in the Saumur tank museum, as ex army, and the museum is owned and managed by the "Cavalry" he did take the measure of the Somua for me, i made a plan of the frontal armor in my bug report, but as it was not "official" and just bla bla from me it of course didn’t pass, so i decided when i had some time to go there by myself , meet the museum people and measure that thing myself, so i did it, and as i told the moderators before, the result are the same as the technician of the Somua told me before, and i know for sure Gaijin didn’t took took the Somua frontal armor measures, we can’t blame them, there is so many units in game that its kind of tricky, but still, reading books and reports from both sides, the results were the same, the Wehrmarcht had to use bigger guns such 88 flaks and Stuka bombers to blow up those tanks, because in panic, German reports was saying the same: we can’t pierce the Somua and B1 bis frontally, the german nickname of their anti tank shells on both French tanks was « knock knock », that was the sound of their anti tank bouncing shells on the Somua S.35, and i understand why...

 

NOTE: the Somua S.35 is a 3 part cast tank, the cast was extremelly well done as the French technics regarding was flawless at that time, this means, great steel, homogeneous cast.

 

Also to make this measures i had to ask the currator permission, which he did, telling me the frontal hull armor thickness is about 47mm at minimum and 57mm at maximum, he judge that 1cm could be loss in some irregular cast parts, he also told me the turret armor is 45mm all around which is correct in War Thunder, BUT the mantlet and frontal armor of the Somua S.35 has been measured at 56mm, unfortunatelly, you need to remove all parts to measure that, something i couldn't do of course, so after a little chat he gave me the green card for 10 mn to take some measures and cross the public restrictions barriers, so now the fact.

 

1st, i measure the Turret thickness, and its correct, its 45,2mm of thickness, so no need to post pix here as the values are ok in game.

2st, as i said, it wasn't possible to measure all parts of the Somua mantlet and frontal turret armor, but 45+ extra armor = 56mm as the currator told me, and trust me, i believe him!

3rd, here the measure of the Somua S.35 frontal cast armor from the pilot hatch...ENJOY.

 

Hatch recess thickness from the frontal cast = 33.52mm of armor.

Frontal armor from the pilot hatch = 55.30mm ! 

 

So the 47mm datas of the Somua S.35 frontal armor is absolutely correct, and they taking it from the very low thickness possibility of the cast, the average is more 50mm than 47mm!

 

So now we now WHY any Pak 36 or even Panzer III "37mm" couldn't pen. the Somua, and knowing the 37mm PzGr. 39, the War Thunder 35mm of frontal thickness value is just pure fantasy, but that, i knew it for a very long time.

Nothing further SWIFT_SILENT,  as you can imagine the Developer's have been busy with 1.89.
