This is definitely a destroyer, but in the "already suggested" post it's listed as a light cruiser.

Either way, I'd love to play around with this.

I think one of the Mods may have made a mistake LOL. Le Terrible is many things but a CL is not one of them

indeed. the Le Fantasque-class was re-rated as light cruisers after being refit in the US throughout 1943 and 1944 though they only had about half the primary armament (at best) appropriate for a contemporary CL.

Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships 1922-1946; in its piece on the class even mentions at the very end that the Le Fantasque-class ships still lacked the range of a real cruiser.

It was a destroyer leader, basically the same as the Leningrad/Moskva and Tashkent, except I would say that those ships have superior armament, especially the latter.

? neither wikipedia nor Conway's state that they were ever leaders or meant to act as them. the Le Fantasque-class and the earlier Chacal-class were meant to operate with (read: screen) BBs, CAs, and CLs as part of fleets, though they were not limited to such actions.

Right smack dab in the middle is the Le Fantasque-class.

Also here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flotilla_leader

Both mention Fantasque as a destroyer/flotilla leader in the same vein as the Tashkent and Leningrad classes.

ah. makes sense. it's always interesting to see how ships in the nebulous Heavy Destroyer/Scout Cruiser grey area are treated considering how inherently multirole-friendly they were, even if a certain task wasn't what they were built in mind for. the Le Fantasque's were intended as extra fast screens just like the preceding Chacal-class but were additionally large enough and fast enough to act as a spearhead if need be.

Realistically, from what I can tell, the concept of a "destroyer leader" itself is not fully agreed upon. There are many (actual) light cruisers in that list, and ships that are generally considered to be just standard destroyers as well, like the Gearing and Sumner. It seems to be just any ship that either did, or was able to, function as the flagship for a group of destroyers.

A Cruiser or a Destroyer ! Hard to say !
The Contre-torpilleur was a large destroyed designed for outmach the Italian destroyer ( armed whive 102 mm ) & outperform the speed of italian light-cruiser .
Ultimately , the Itaian designed a light cruiser for hunt them , the Capitani Romani

Spoiler

A really beautiful " Light destroyer "  , capable of 43 knots

Spoiler

Ironically
The French scraped the Contre-torpilleur concept in late 30's &  adopted a new line of "Destroyer " designed for fightin in the atlantic
The Hardi class was designed for a true "destroyer " .
Powerful , seaworthy & cheap enought for be mass produced

The US navy classified the ship like a "light cruiser  "after refit .The French "post war " navy classified those ship " Escorteur-d'escadre " , basically a Capital-ship escort
