Sweden in War Thunder

rPtcveP.png

Hello everyone! This is a suggestion for an independant Swedish air force tech tree in War Thunder which has been created in collaboration with Sp15’s independant Swedish ground forces tree:

Sweden has previously been suggested in several other trees by many people. The most popular of these have been an international tech tree and a combined tree with Finland and other nordic countries.

Now, why should Sweden get their own air force tech tree? Well it's simple. A Swedish tech tree would contain a lot of unique and historically significant aircraft, at least from a technical standpoint as Sweden never officially joined WW2 nor any other war since. Moreover, the Swedish Air Force was at one point the fourth largest force of its type in the entire world, being outnumbered only by the air forces of the USA, Great Britain and USSR. Sweden has also produced multiple technologically advanced aircraft and continue doing this today.

Some of you might know that Gaijin has previously mentioned Swedish planes and vehicles. In the devblog for the CL-13 and ✙Mig-15 years ago they mentioned that they originally looked into implementing the Swedish SAAB 29 as a German top tier jet, but later decided to go with the CL-13 and Mig-15 as they were more historical. This shows that there are at least some interest from Gaijins side to implement Swedish aircraft into the game. In the Shooting Range Episode 67 the host is stating that “Sweden had some great machines of their own but not enough to give them a separate tech tree”.

Now it is true that Sweden if implemented will have the smallest air tech tree in the game but it will definitely have enough machines to be a full tech tree. So basically this thread is here to disprove that statement, and in the process outline how a Swedish tree could be built. The suggested tree consist of no less than four lines dominated by domestic designs and includes plenty of interesting premium aircraft:

Comment: Sweden ordered a second variant of the Ca.313 for torpedo bombing which besides the torpedo has some minor visual differences. Although in the end these were not used for torpedo bombing due to bad manufacturing quality, but in game it would be cool to have a torpedo carrying T 16B.

Comment: Not much is known about this variant. One document mentions there being B 18A’s armed with only 8 mm ksp m/22 machine guns but that might only have been some very early production examples or even the prototype. Its very likely that if these was B 18A’s with 8 mm machine guns then they would have very quickly into their service life been upgraded with 13,2 mm cannons. Also the earliest of B 18A’s probably did not have access to bomb forks and could not divebomb. More research is needed.

Guns
6,5 mm ksp m/22: The first variant of the ksp m/22, this was a Swedish variant of the Colt m1919, or more specifically the 7,62 mm AN/M2 (army/navy) aircraft variant.
7.7 mm Colt M1919: Norwegian variant of the Colt m1919. Fired the 7.7 mm .303 British cartridge.
8 mm ksp m/22: Upgraded ksp m/22. This is the fixed belt fed variant. Existed in right and left fed variants, ‘m/22Fh’ and ‘m/22Fv’, for ‘Fast höger’ (Fixed right) and ‘Fast vänster’ (Fixed left).
8 mm ksp m/22R: Defensive variant. Had a double grip and mainly used drum magazines.
8 mm ksp m/22-37R: Defensive variant. Had a single grip and at the start mainly used saddle magazines. Although fairly quickly into its service life it became belt fed on most planes who used it such as the B 17’s.
13,2 mm akan m/39: Fixed and defensiva auto cannon. Akan m/39’s where built by Belgian FN-Herstal, while m/39A’s were built by Swedish Ericsson, also known as LME. The m/39 and m/39A did differ slightly and could act as upgrades, similarly to the British hispano cannons of several mods and years.
12,7 mm akan m/39: Re-barreled 13,2 mm akan m/39.
12,7 mm akan m/45: Swedish designation for the 12,7 mm AN/M2, aircraft m2 browning mg.

20 mm akan m/37: Prototype 20 mm cannon only used on the first B 3 that came to Sweden.
20 mm akan m/41: Swedish designation for the HS.404 autocannon. Some were manufactured in Sweden and where apparently more reliable than the original Swiss built ones.
20 mm akan m/45 Bofors: Swedish belt fed autocannon.
20 mm akan m/46A: Swedish designation for the Hispano Mk II Mod 46.
20 mm akan m/47B: Swedish designation for the Hispano Mk V. The B only had 150 round magazines.
20 mm akan m/47C: Swedish designation for the Hispano Mk V. Some built in Sweden. The C had 180 round magazines.
20 mm akan m/49 Bofors: Upgraded akan m/45 with higher rate of fire.
57 mm akan m/47: Anti-submarine and ship autocannon used on the T 18B. Had a 40 round drum magazine but flew commonly with a chambered round adding up to 41 rounds.

On the subject of tier 6 and helicopters

Spoiler

Due to Gaijin’s recent statement on the subject of supersonic aircraft and air-to-air missiles, tier 6 aircraft will not be included in the suggestion for now. Of course, Sweden has potential for tier 6 aircraft. Examples of such aircraft include the J 29F, the J 35 and the J 32B. On the other hand, helicopters have been highlighted as having potential for introduction, more so than supersonic jets, and as such they have been included in a separate line.

Designations

Spoiler

I’ll quickly clear up a few terms here. The terms ‘RBv’ and ‘FBv’ refer to ‘Reducerad Beväpning’ (Reduced Armament) and ‘Förbättrad Beväpning' (Improved armament) respectively.

Some discrepancies can be found in the text regarding the caliber of certain weapons, where a comma is used rather than a dot. This is because commas are used in place of dots in measurements in Sweden and this carries over to official designations.

Balance

Spoiler

Sweden was a strict non-belligerent nation in the timeframe relevant to War Thunder. This means that Sweden could be matched with most nations without much issue in order to balance matches. This is with two exceptions however, the USSR, who has always been seen as the enemy of Sweden, as well as Japan to whom Sweden has never had any intimate relations in military matters, largely due to geographical reasons.

Added helicopter line which might become relevant in the future based on Gaijin's statements.

Great research.

Now with Rank 6 ground veichles maybe you can add J27 Viggen to the list (if Gajin would decide to add Rank 6 to planes too), would be epic as it's one of the legendary Swedish planes :)

But really, I hope Gajin decides to add Swedish planes to War Thunder and as a Swede it would be a pleasure to fly around shooting all of the russian planes :P

Also, great job on the research! :)

Why not? There appear to be enough aircraft to have an acceptable tree. Though achievements may be an issue, "From Sweden To Sweden I/II/III/IV/V." :dntknw: But that's minor. I'd say Sweden would be on the NATO side, and world war era would probably be thrown on the Allied side (just because of the Gaijin factor). For once a "minor" military nation won't have a near-bare tech tree. I'd like to see this.

I wouldn't have anything against this, seeing as most of the air tree tree is made up of original designs with few if any paper projects (other than the J-21B, which to my knowledge was planned but never built).  Ground forces are a no-brainer.

That said, one has to wonder which side they'd be on in most battles, since Sweden was TECHNICALLY neutral during World War II and the Cold War (I say 'technically' because during World War II Sweden gave resources to whichever side seemed more likely to invade them at a given time if they refused, whether it was Germany or the USSR, and during the Cold War they were on slightly better terms with NATO than the Warsaw Pact - during the Winter War between Finland and the USSR they were DEFINITELY on Finland's side, along with the UK, Germany, and Italy).  I guess it could be selected randomly or vary depending on the map.  For example, that new Frontline map added in 1.79 (based on part of Finland) would have Sweden be on the Axis side.

Well, it's not like Gaijin really cares about historical accuracy on most cases, as evidenced by the many times where I have played Japan with US/UK vs France/Germany/USSR.

But IMHO, Sweden should lean to the axis side, mostly to make it four nations against four nations, and also because of the posibility of sticking Finland into the tree.

I guess that's a fair argument, since Italy's going to be the 'minor Axis tree' too going by Gaijin's current plans, plus they did provide materiel support (mostly steel) for the Axis during World War II up until it became pretty clear that Germany was no longer a threat to Sweden's sovereignty.

  • 2 months later...

Personally i'm more interested in Swedish ground forces but we need air forces first to have the ground forces, so yes i support this idea!

I will add Swedish as my main tree after Japan.

I really like your tech tree for Sweden but here’s one thing that needs to change. The Saab 29 should be at 8.0 since that’s where it will be competed with the yak 23 and g91. So pretty much the only jet I notice would be perfect for 9.0 would be the lansen since it’s pretty much a Swedish variant of the hunter.

The SAAB 29 is plenty capable of acting as a 9.0 jet. It's in the same league as the F-86 and MiG-15. Among other attributes, it claimed two worlds speed world records, in 1954 and in 1955 respectively. As for Lansen, while I get what you're saying, it only really took on the fighter role properly with the update to the J 32B model which included upgraded armament and most importantly, a new engine equipped with an afterburner. The latter would make it impossible to add at the moment. As for the Hunter comparison, Sweden actually operated Hawker Hunters, or J 34 in Swedish service for some time as a stopgap in the daytime interceptor role before the J 35 entered service. Again, the J 34 was equipped with an afterburner (F.4 model) and would as such not be suitable for WT.

Nordic tech tree would be better.

This project was actually preceded by a Scandinavian (Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark) tech tree. However, that tree has with time transformed into a focus on a purely Swedish tree. This both because it was realised that Sweden could present a sufficient number of vehicles to form a relevant tree, and because single nation trees are generally preferred over multi-national ones due to practicality, design history, and politics.

Unfortunately the other Nordic nations wouldn't have enough aircraft to make up even a complete branch (not counting imports) since most of them were occupied by Germany pretty early into the war, and Finland more or less just imported everything they used.  I could see some of their more unique aircraft being premium or event planes though.

Then I'm against it.

There is enough obsolete tech trees already on this game.

What makes it "obsolete" in your opinion? It has unique vehicles, historical reasons for inclusion, and is of sufficient size

wait, so your against it BECAUSE it doesn't include the other nordic nations, and is thus rendered obsolete? even though it was JUST said that all the others (norway/denmark) were occupied and finland was using copies (well, and reverse engineered)? also, just what trees ingame are "obsolete"?

seriously was there any thought process at all in this statement?

not to mention that the swedes were able to mostly keep pace with; or flat out outdo; established world powers with some of their planes.

plus of course there's nothing saying that norwegian and danish planes (read: US/UK exports) CAN'T be added at a later date. TBH i kind of expect gaijin to add planes like the norwegian F-84, AKA gaijin's fetish plane that they add to every new tree now :P

It will go politics if I express my opinion. :)

Well I don't see any issue if it's relevant. However, politics is one of the strongest arguments against having a mixed tech tree in this case. Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland never really operated parallel to each other within the scope of WT, only with a few volunteer units from Sweden to Norway and mostly Finland respectively
