Hello everyone.

The Black ground shadow should be fixed with the latest Nvidia driver (396.24) So I would advise everyone to upgrade to that as soon as they can, When your distro's repo/PPA upgrades to it, etc.

@Remaros,

They do fix bugs, all the time, The thing is though these issues that come up aren't always fixable by the Devs, Sometimes they are related to specific drivers (AMD or Nvidia) or other specific software on peoples systems. This black shadow issue for instance only happens on Nvidia cards, So it's not just a WT specific issue, But something related to both WT and the Nvidia driver.

I have noticed any crashing myself personally, If you post any error messages and your system information I might be able to help you.

@Cayari,

It is the latest Short Lived Branch version as you can see here:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

I don't personally understand the difference between Long Lived and Short Lived as they both seem to run the same version just the Long Lived Branch is further behind. I see them both as "stable" to be honest as they are both the same drivers, Just ones older than the other. The Short Lived Branch aren't Beta drivers so I don't see a problem with them. But as I said it all depends on what your distro updates to and when it does it.

@apemax

none of the bugs i reported were fixed. Even the one with the square lines on lowest settings possible is still here (reported a year ago?). Other are related to nvidia/amd drivers are hotfixed for windows. I saw somewhere on the forum that similar or exactly the same bug related to the shadowthingy was present on windows side yet somehow they managed to hotfix it. Take a look at mac subforum... same thing happening as here. No one gives a damn on gaijin part. No one other than You responds here. I dont know if You are a paid moderator but if not then it means that no one from gaijin responded to anything here. If any of the developers came here and answered some questions then it would feel like they know that there are issue and they aknowledge them.... Btw How long was the engine developed? year? and now how long was it that the 1.77 was released? 9 weeks? and still there was no fix for linux or mac issues. Regarding the bug i mentioned game crashes cuz cant compile a shader and im not gona waste my time reporting it since gaijin doesn't uses his time to fix things or even show their a$$e$ here to answer few simple questions.

I'm not sure if the new compiler or fixes apply to cards before the 9 and 10 series, yes you can install the driver on any series of nvidia cards, that doesn't mean they all share the same fixes and features!

With all due respect guy, but I think you're being too harsh or exigent things.

See here that there are people who have noticed that there are long-time bugs, also on Windows that have not been solved, but that turn around and try to solve the questions themselves.

I use a 750ti with 1G of memory and I installed the nvidia drive 396.24 , advised by apemax

btw this is how the game looks like on the Vulkan render right now (on Windows though and i'm running quite old drivers but still...)

5af449fcab130_shot2018_05_0307_08_10.thu

5af449fe486e5_shot2018_05_0307_08_02.thu

i would say that this isn't really any better from what you experience right now ^^ but at least Vulkan is coming closer to release as it seems

after updating my nVidia drivers the graphics issues (blue patches and the display of smoke) on the vulkan render are gone.

still the performance isn't the same as on the DirectX11 render but maybe it is better than openGL 3.3 ?!

ofc i still dont know whether Vulkan is running on Linux or not but maybe some of you want to give it a try !?

so here is what i did to get it running:

1. create a file named    pkg_vulkan.rq2   in the ..\War Thunder\content\  folder (there should be some other pkg_***.rq2 files

in that folder as well) - the file can be an empty file... personally i just duplicated / copied and renamed the pkg_main.rq

2. start the launcher... it should analyze the game files and once done it should download the necessary files for Vulkan

(like precompiled shaders etc)

3. open the config.blk in the War Thunder main game directory and edit the  renderer3  and  driver  variables from

renderer3:t="auto"
driver:t="auto"

to

renderer3:t="vulkan"
driver:t="vulkan"

(according to my tests   vulkan   must be written in small letters... writing Vulkan (capital V) made my client crash on the start)

4. run the game via the aces(.exe) bypassing the launcher (since it will reset the render setting to auto... at least it did for me)

so yea... that's how it's working on Windows... maybe some things are different on the Linux client (file names, variables etc)

but since you are console gurus i'm sure you can figure it out ^^ good luck...

disclaimer: i'm not taking any responsibilities for anything happening (or not happening ^^). try those changes solely at your

own discretion and risk. if you get it running expect some issues (maybe even crashes) - i guess there is a (good) reason for

Vulkan not having been officially released yet.. so i doubt that it's even worth putting in bug reports related to the Vulkan render

just yet.

@relliK, to be honest, i didn't expect anything of this will work for linux (maybe we 'console freaks' are disillusioned to much already),

... but i tried it (becouse ... you know?) and surprisingly it works (basically) with my uptodate mesa/radv stack.

The only small differences for linux:

- in linux 'config.blk' there is a "renderer2:t="auto", changed to "renderer2:t="vulkan"

- it doesnt work with 'old graphic card support' enabled (my default since months)

So many thanks for the hint mate and let us hope it will evolve in the near future, to be usable for everyone.

and not only usable but also better optimized so the performance will finally be better (maybe even up to par with the DX11 render ?!)

talking about the performance: what is it like ? is it any better than openGL yet )or even worse  8D) ?

also one other thing i noticed was that the picture was somewhat darker than on DX11 (and actually too dark for me personally) but

there was no gamma setting in the options (note to self: need to ckeck if the game is running on true fullscreen and not full window).

.. the performance is not really good yet. Compared to OpenGL ULQ it is worse. But iam still surprised and impressed

about the fact, that this early implementation actually exist and obviously all (or at least allmost all) graphical details are already working.

And it didnt crash so far for me.

I only tried RADV, the other 2 available vulkan drivers (AMDVLK & AMD-PRO) have to be tested later.

There are 2 visible bugs thought: If i climb and fly over a altitude of 100-200m the plane is loosing its textured surface and turns in to 100% black.

In hangar view everything except the sky is black (maybe both  problems are related to TrueSky/shader?) .

Fingers crossed :good:.

Vulkan support existed for a while now (in terms of setting the renderer to vulkan), but some shader packages were missing with the distribution, so it would abort in the middle of loading up. I am mostly expecting a drop in CPU usage which is really high for nVidia OpenGL (i.e. the driver consuming more CPU time than the actual game IIRC). I'll try the Vulkan renderer on my dual core office notebook @ 2,3 Ghz and report what happens. :) ... and I'm totally open to anything ... gfx glitches, worse performance, stuttering, whatever. It is no official renderer yet, and that prolly has reasons.

EDIT: Read your post more closely now, @relliK. I always wondered where or how one can pull the missing shader package. So that's how. Kudos to you, because I'd never have figured that out on my own; I mean the creation of the pkg_vulkan.rq2 file.

Great results guys! I got a 25% boost on Low settings.

System: i5-4200U @ 1.6 Ghz, GeForce GT 740M with 2 GiB (GK208), 8 GiB DDR3

Resolution: 1366x768, VSYNC OFF

Tank Battle

War Thunder 1.77.2.170, Linux 4.14.41, nVidia drivers 396.24:

Low : OpenGL 40.0 avg, Vulkan 50.0 avg
Medium : OpenGL 31.5 avg, Vulkan 35.8 avg
Maximum : OpenGL 20.3 avg, Vulkan 20.2 avg

War Thunder 1.75.0.194, Linux 4.12.14, nVidia drivers 387.34:

Low : OpenGL 65.6 avg
Medium : OpenGL 49.0 avg
Maximum : OpenGL 28.8 avg

As you can see, performance is still a big stretch from where it once was in 1.75, but also no worse overall. In particular those 25% extra FPS on Low (due to more light weight API?) might motivate some of you guys to try out @relliK's suggestion with recent drivers. Here is a little bar graph illustrating the performance on Low:

5b009fee4a117_wt1.77fpsgraph.png.47918cf

P.S.: So far I had two crashes and flickering of: rockets, decoration bushes, tank tracks at least on NVIDIA's drivers. So bring a bit of desperation to try it out. :p

Slowly but surely, VulkanAPI is the way to go so its good that Gaijin are gradually working on it.  Its just a matter of the engine backend devs wrapping their head around it all since its quite a change from traditional dx and ogl coding.

Well worth it non the less.

Got the same issue (black screen, only last frame shown after Alt+F4 - so it's rendered correctly but not displayed).

Interesting. I was using an Optimus laptop, where the rendered image is copied from the NVIDIA card to the Intel for display (http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/396.24/README/randr14.html). Do you both use setups where the monitor is connected directly to the NVIDIA?

People with NVIDIA hardware can try the 396.24.02 beta dev driver, it does have some additional fixes that were in 396.18+ drivers. Note that 396.24 official driver does not have these fixes yet but I suspect a new driver will be released very soon.
