v1.77 and -20fps and black blotches on ground

  • Technical Moderator

Hello @The_Riddick,

Regarding the black blotches on the ground, I already have a report on that and am in the process of getting all the information together to forwarded it.

Regarding the FPS drop, I too am experiencing a drop in FPS in 1.77, Feel free to do a report on it as I am also going to be reporting this myself anyway.

just got into 38th parallel and it gave me as low as 23fps with average around 33fps!!

1.77 is not a linux friendly patch, hate to see the damage on ps4.

Sure when I get around to it, maybe late tonight. I'm not a Gaijin servant you know :p:

PS. Also when game launches it warns about performance issues with opengl.

The performance drop is huge.

Now in 1.77 i have:

Mode                      Average FPS    Minimal FPS    Rating

Windows (movie settings)        225.6          177.3     20992

Windows (max settings)          249.2          193.1     23190

Linux   (max settings)           99.9           63.7      9288

I am running on a Asus Strix GTX 1080/8GB and processor i6700 @3.4GHZ.

With 1.75 performances between windows and linux were quite similar: ingame FPS were around 190.

1.77 is a big step back.

... there is indeed a big performance drop and a lot of visual glitches.

It makes WarThunder, as a native linux/OpenGL client, barely playable on my R9 280x now.

While the used open source mesa driver (radeonsi) is more and more maturing in respect to stability, feature support and performance,

i am really disappointed to see such a poor WarThunder release.

:018:

When we saw that there was a dev server for win, then another one for win and mac, and then...   nothing

We should started think, that this update was on the linux forgetting again profile.

The shadow visually is very annoying, but what really is bad is know, that this could and must be fixed before the realease, discovered and posted at the dev server testing.

And the fps drop, and visual jumps????

 Please gaijin If you don t care about the linux update, or you started it to late to launch with the other ones (because the pop out banner telling some linux config may suffer a drop of performance indicates you know you  were releasing a really poor alpha quality linux client). Let us use the old 1.75.

 Honestly this 1.77 is no nice movement

Not a good day for the penguin at gaijin warthunder

:facepalm:

I've filed a report.

Please note again my specs: Asus Strix GTX 1080/8GB and processor i6700 @3.4GHZ. Motherboard is an Asus Z170PRO. This computer is a little data centre and it's the only reason because gameplay under linux is acceptable.

With windows (that I personally despise, but it's a matter of taste) i play with "movie" settings on all the time, like I used to do with linux back in1.75.

I am also having this problem, just like any other linux user.

I think that they did not release a dev server on linux just because they knew about the problem and they did not want to fix it.  In fact, the release notes already make it explicit:

Quote

Performance with some Linux configurations may be reduced.

For what we can see, by "some Linux configurations" they mean "all Linux configurations we tested but you cannot prove that there isn't one where it works properly". If you do not support Ubuntu+Nvidia you are simply not supporting the game in Linux.

And they also added messages on the game start, so they already knew very well the problems. My guess is that they added features that they couldn't implement in OpenGL so they just released without caring about OpenGL.

So... knowing that they already knew about the problem and did nothing,  and knowing that they did not fix other game breaking issues in Linux for years (held key for camera view), I don't think that they will fix this issue until they release the game with Vulkan support.

+1

My card is a R9 280x too, and the performance is terrible...i need play in ULQ for 40-60 fps or Low for 20-40

Same here, previously a stable 50-60fps (yes it's an old computer) and now even after turning the graphics-settings down, I'm barely getting 10-15fps when flying low. At high altitude the performance hit isn't so bad though, fps stays for the most part above 30 (which I consider the minimum for smooth gameplay).

Yes the FPS drop is larger then I previously thought. My windows install gets amazingly better performance with TAA and higher settings.

Gaijin are aware of the OpenGL issues, they tell you on launch. I really doubt they can fix it without turning off all the new 1.77 stuff or spending 6 months code crunching to improve opengl! the most likely and best option is to work hard on getting VulkanAPI implemented and thus platform unification can occur, even Mac/Apple PC's now allow for Vulkan so there isn't much reason not to use it.

Is there already a certain release date to VulkanAPI implementation in War Thunder?

A dev said that MAC openGL version and linux version, both use openGL3.3

TL:DR

Linux version use openGL 3.3 and u can test using the command

MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=3.3 ./aces

We have been working on Vulkan for long time. Most of the time Vulkan version is working. But, unfortunately, not always working as good as it should. So we are not releasing it yet.

Main issue is shaders...

Yes GLSL != OpenGL

Its the shader engine or something and needs to be set to 4.3, (or 4.1 I can't remember)

MESA_GLSL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=410    (or 430)

This link may help if you wish to do further testing and debugging.  https://www.mesa3d.org/envvars.html

ALSO lastly keep in mind I don't believe this is the correct method for limiting it on NVIDIA cards? I could be wrong.

I obtain the same result using those two env vars.
