From former Leclerc tank commander Froggy:

From the developpment name to current designation:

EPC

AMX Leclerc

GIAT Leclerc

NEXTER Leclerc

It's nickname in the french army is XL (for AMX Leclerc, as we called the AMX30 serie X30, AMX10P X10...)

Leclerc renovation is called XLR

AMX56 is a wrong denomination from Jane's.

Initial project was 48 tonnes.

Prototypes were 53 tonnes.

Serie 1, 54T

Retrofited Serie 1, 55T

Serie 2, 56 T

Serie SXXI (and not serie 3...) 57T

XLR, NOT KNOWN currently.

Most of those are nicknames or unofficial designations.

Personally I think we should stick with what the DGA and the army use which is simply "Char Leclerc"

Not anymore classified than the FV-4030.

Does Ares get weaker armour than production models? Any estimates we can figure out?

This graphic from the Swedish  tank trials should help a bit to get a better understanding of the Leclerc Serie 1 armor:

Wrong Leclerc: the Ares is a pre-series prototype and doesn’t have the distictive “curving” front of the production version.

To answer the question: we don’t know. It’s most likely classified.

I am working on a Leclerc Serie 1 armor distribution model based on the data from the Swedish tanks trials, Tamiya, Darklabor and GIAT/NEXTER drawings. I will have something ready to present fairly soon.

I do not  plan to do anything on the Ares because i have no drawings on it and i have no armor estimate range on it.   I think the  Leclerc Bayard, Carnot, Duroc, Estienne, Foch prototypes or Leclerc Serie 1  would be the more appropriate vehicles.

The Leclerc prototyoes are a must now that the M1A1 and more than 1 Leo2 production variants were confirmed, we shall see the AMX-40 first probably in 1.79, but I would've preferred to see the AMX-32 with the 105mm, that would be the real 9.0 of France, with the 120mm variant at 9.3, then AMX-40 at 9.7 and the AMX-40E4 (uparmored variant) at 10.0

Then we could see the Leclerc prototypes with Leclerc ARES at 10.3/10.7 and Leclerc BAYARD at 10.7/11.0

I am kinda leaning towards the first production model, the Leclerc Serie 1:

I support this, though please, current top vehicles such as M1 are easily 11.0 worthy, leclerc would easily be worth 13.0, same with Leopard 2A5 and such.

imo, M1, Challenger and T-64B are worth 10.0br, so AMX-40E4 could get on the same level, and would let some space for the XM1 and the Shir 2

Here's some clearer pictures of AMX-32, AMX-40, Leclerc Prototypes, Série 1,2 and XXI
