Salutations everybody

I am suggesting B1 Bis n° 505 as a new tank for the recently introduced French ground forces. 505 is a bit different from the other members of B1 family as it was a late production model with an modified rear end and was sent into battle as a SPG.

Numbers 505-507 were specifically ordered in June 1940, without the turret due to a lack of availability. Instead possessing a hole where the turret should be (only Italy put a 60mm cap over the opening) and the addition of a 170 litre fuel tank leading to a slightly modified rear end. Otherwise the tank has the standard armour and ammunition. It was seen as a last ditch effort by the french to hold the line although it should be noted that it now gained a lower silhouette while keeping its very powerful main cannon. In addition the commander now had a far easier time with his job with the removal of the one man turret. It is unknown how well it performed in combat in this new form.

Initially 505 and the other decapitated tanks were assigned to the 46e BCC however they were transferred to the 47e when their numbers dwindled after losses in battle. At one point 505 was used briefly as a military tractor.

However it wasn't the only one to gain this new look. There are different sources claiming how many actually got this unique treatment (505-507) were specifically ordered this way, but not only were there others, but France wasn't the only ones to posses it.

With defeat near several French factory works decided the best thing to do was keep them out of German hands by hiding 8 B1 Bis's, half of which lacked the turret, in a cave near Baux en Provence in July 1940. However the plan was exposed when an Italian worker revealed the location to Italian authorities in Oct. One turretless tank was tested, but nothing further was done with them and they were most likely scrapped.

Incidentally, I have read that these particular Char B1 Bis hulls had the same limited horizontal traverse for the 75mm that the Ter has, which would make them much more useful in game. I’ll try and find the source for that later.

Okay, I found the article:

Quote

Amongst the French stocks supplied was a quantity of 20 x B1 Bis. heavy tanks, pulled unfinished from the suspended F.C.M. production line, because they were missing their turrets. These B1’s were of the latest type made by F.C.M., omitting the overly complicated Nader type transmission system and with limited traverse for the hull howitzer, just like on the B1 Ter.

well that's also cool. number 505 551 must've been pushed out of the factory so fast that no painting past the primer was done. reminds of me of all the skins on WT.live with panthers having leftover paint applied over parts of primer for an ersatz camouflage.

No. 551 > No. 505

In reality I should've suggested all turretless B1's instead of being so specific and going with 505 (at the time it was the only one with decent pictures that I could find)...

However for you here is n ° 551 as she was found 38 km north of Limoges on June 25, 1940

On that note what would her paint scheme be called in WT? "Oh ****. Uh good enough."

Seems like this can fit comfortably in 2.0/1.7.  Gaijin can decide if would be in the tech tree or premium, it should work either way.
