How do I fight German aircraft in the F4U-1A?

7 posts in this topic

I have no problems fighting Japanese aircraft in the Corsair. They are easy pickings. My problem comes when I fight German aircraft. They can match most of my strengths and it's really difficult to counter that. They climb higher than me at all times and my only hope of getting an advantage is to sideclimb until they all dive away. If one of them just rushes me while I'm climbing I'm screwed. Help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would study your own post and words you used to describe your approach with counter offensive tactics.

Study WWII historical air-air battles and use those real life tactics in game for realism and immersion.

Clue, he climbs you extend out his gun closure range keeping situational awareness (S.A.)on him then as he flys back down, quickly do a half-cuban eight on top  ( birds eye view ) as he now is below you at safe climb height and fire bursts and  follow through with proper energy management, is one approach.

Timing is the important factor, it is tricky, you need to practice this, when to trigger the half Cuban-eight manuever.

Use a little bank angle and rudder to come on his side as you half Cuban-eight firing gun bursts across his engine bay and canopy as you are coming off the top range of the circle.

This strategy approach like all others works best on correct conditions and critical factors that ensure guns only lethality of kill success.

Opps, giving away my trade secrets used in other sim games. LoL

Thanks. I apologize for the wording of this post, I was just a bit mad while making this post due to getting jumped by two Bf 109s and a He 100 while climbing.

Yeah if they are up high in trail and you dont see them they will sneak up and you either have to jink like mad and use terrain low level flight to avoid battle damage or they have good shots on you.

I got jumped a few times in SB but I was alone in a 1.0BR aircraft and it was like a surprise attack did not see them or know that they had a tally on me.

Best advice keep scanning the skies often and dont panic when your experiencing fire, just think procedure is................... do this and that to survive.

But really who plays this game realistically anyway. :dntknw:

When u spawn after the first encounter check the stats, if you see one of the top 1-3 players on the other team in a 109 and 3x more kills do not go high.

Target identification and avoidance are key to all encounters, no matter what nation. The basic principles are virtually always the same. If German aircraft retain energy better than you, you need an energy advantage before you go head to head, etc etc. If you are at a disadvantage to an enemy, find a target where you have the advantage.

It's only because most 109 pilots have only ever graduated from the boom and zoom Academy / watched too many WT youtube tutorials that they feel they need to be higher than everyone else. They're often best left alone and bypassed from the battle completely, which often happens.

They pick on the unaware for fear of getting into a 'proper' fight.

But as stated above. You answered your own question. Climb where it's safe to do so if you feel you must. Your teammates will surely thank you for keeping the 109's busy in an altitude war whilst the battle ( for battle, read fun ) rages on elsewhere.

So I’ve had quite a bit or recent experience flying the F4U’s in AB of late. I’ve flown the two earliest variants and fully spaded them. I’m still relatively new player, and no air ace. But I’ve gotten a whole lot better: it’s rugged beauties like the F4U and P47 I’m finding my most success.

Why?

I’ve found you need to play to the F4U’s key strengths of great dive and plentiful ammunition. Some tips:

  • Side climb at the start of the battle. In Air AB’s I found somewhere between 3.5k-to-4k. Never climb straight into the middle of the map
  • Stay above the fur ball and BNZ targets that become isolated or tunnel visioned on attacking a team mate
  • Have your escape route pre-planned i.e. BNZ in and then climb back out to 2k
  • When I BNZ I'm always zooming back towards my teams side of the map, as reinforcements are always coming in - I attack from the west/east, swoop down, fire then BNZ south towards the spawn point
  • Always be scanning your environment – ME109s and FW190s love to climb and BNZ you!
  • Learn the art of deflection shooting and use controlled bursts of 1-to-2 seconds: when I BNZ I don’t drop directly down on their 6 but at a slight angle (more like 5 o’clock on their tail). When I open fire I use tracer rounds and shoot a little ahead and “spray” for a few seconds to rake the enemy plane
  • If you’re caught on the deck dodge/wobble a little and head towards friendly AA or team mates – the F4U is surprisingly fast near the ground so try and use that to your advantage
  • Never ever turn fight!
  • You’re a big plane so try not to present to big a target when turning or climbing
  • When I see a 109 or 190 a few clicks out I’ll start side climbing, looking to gain altitude advantage – this seems to make them more wary of approaching me
  • Bombers are you’re best targets! Attack them from the side and aim for the wings… He111s, Do217s and JU88s are good pickings!

I've flown lots of German planes and find the biggest mistake American pilots in the F4U make is staying near the ground far too long and chase - if you're BNZ shot misses, disengage and climb.

My game plan at the start of each session is this: generally I’ll side climb to 4k above my teams bases and hunt a bombers as they fly in. After I’ve downed one or two I’ll head to where the main fur ball is and circle above looking for the best targets of opportunity – pure BNZ from then on.

A fully spaded F4U is a pretty solid fighter – I found once I got the engine and fuel injection mods performance was much improved. Also make sure your add points to gun maintenance to reduce jams.

The key is to situational awareness – don’t let them get on your six or height on you.

I've gotten higher tier US planes, but I've created a squad for lower tier battles so I can keep flying the F4U coz I love it so much.
