How to Record Replays/Games

Ok so iv'e seen this asked countless times both on steam and this fourm; people want to show off them epic plays, or just how (Supposedly) broke a vehicle is.

Now I cant help you gather the information you would actually need to prove some tank is broke; however I can show you how to record games or replays.

Ok first off what is a replay?! Cant I just export it? Actually no; the replay only contains instructions and pointers for the game engine to recreate a given match.

There is also no Rewind function; I was fairly familiar with this because I played C&C a lot as a kid where it handled replays the same way.

So then what DO you need?! First you need some screen capture software; OBS studio is the program of choice now due to it being lightweight, robust and open source.

https://obsproject.com/

From there just download the correct version for your OS ;unless you are running a 32 bit OS always grab the X64 version.

Now these are not absolutes but I feel like mentioning it; these programs will beat up your CPU to no end. So a strong Quad-Core with a decent freq is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED; however even if you aren't rocking a sick build I would still try just to see if your comp can take it.

Ok so you got the software; now you need to set it up to actually record.

I cannot take any credit for these settings https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/obs-classic-how-to-make-high-quality-local-recordings.16/ <these settings are what I based mine on.

Spoiler

OBS Studio 17.0.1 (64bit, windows) - Profile_ Untitled - Scenes_ Untitled 1_30_2017 11_27_15 PM.png

So now you can record without getting your poor lappy hot enough to bake a potato; this is great but unless we want to usher in a new era of silent cinema I'm pretty sure sound is needed.

Normally desktop audio will be automatically selected; a quick check should be done to make sure it hooked the correct audio device though (Also I know it's reading my CPU @100C just ignore that)

Also if you record and notice your mic is not being picked up there are two solutions; go into Control Panel>Hardware and sound>Manage audio Devices. Then go to the "Recording" tab and see if theres something weird like "Stereo Mix". If there is then find the microphone and set "Listen to this device" Then select "Stereo Mix" Then tell OBS to hook it by going to the + sign below sources and select "Audio inputs".

The second solution is just to tell it to use the mic directly; in my experience OBS hooking the mic is much better than passing it thru whatever weirdness is otherwise available. You could also record the audio seperatly with a program like Audicity; this gives you the option to dub out things that you might not want people to hear (Like my freaking dogs). Or add in misc. sounds later; this is what more dedicated youtubers will do. What you choose to do is completely dependent on your system; along with how much time you want to spend on the recording.

Phew and we're still not in-game yet!

Ok so from here just mash the shortcut until the launcher gets in your face; then hit play; afterwards scroll over to menu and select replays.

Then find the assortment of dank memes you want to relive (Again)

Spoiler

20170131002158_1.jpg

Ok so now this is the screen you will be greeted by; go ahead and pause the replay so you can ALT+TAB and run OBS.

Once OBS gets going ALT+TAB back into WT; we got some cleaning up to do.

Now do you see all of those menus? The tiny arrows next to them will collapse them; also I suggest you also hit 2 for player view on the little bar on the top. Why? Because unless player view is selected you wont see yourself Zoom or Going into different views (Such as cockpit or Gunner).

Spoiler

Then after you collapse everything and finish connecting; this will be what your screen will look like. Below your username it will show Vehicles destroyed; along with assists.  Now pause here; ALT+TAB to OBS and begin recording.

Spoiler

Misc. I cannot show you how to edit videos; normally a program like adobe after effects is used to add SFX and moar dank memes. I don't have this software; nor the knowledge to use it since the fee is like 100 USD or 15/Mo for the creative cloud. That's hard to justify unless you do it for a living or have enough advertising revenue to offset it; I would consult youtube since there are dozens of great tutorials on those programs.

Also open source alternatives to Adobe And/or AutoDesk programs are scarce; even when they exist for the application they rarely offer the same ease of use or file formats making them a pain to use.

If you have an Educational License for these programs; as long as you don't make money off of the videos you should be fine. Tread lightly though; the terms and conditions of EDU licenses often define "Making Money" so loosely that something seemingly fine could be against the EULA of that program.

Additionally respect the rights of other artists; using music you don't have the rights to is not ok and can lead to unexpected strikes, salty tears or in the worst cases an inability to grasp why your channel just got nuked by YouTube. There is a large assortment of Copyright free music or Music that can be "Microlicensed" where you pay a fee to actually get the rights to use it in a video. As always tread carefully; even if explicitly not stated treat all music as if it was copyrighted unless proven otherwise.

Also as always the people posting afterward are free to give suggestions, tell me that the P51 is a undertiered clubbing machine of doom etc.

Happy Hunting and enjoy!

[email protected],

I thought to share also as it might help others as well  I use FRAPS............. http://www.fraps.com/

Been using FRAPS for video recording for years now and it works great on my PC.

I heard some say BANDICAM ........... https://www.bandicam.com/  is better for FPS CPU usage but I have stuck with FRAPS and its good.

I'm hoping the developer releases a newer version and more modern GUI, its been a while now!

FRAPS SETUP YOUTUBE:-

BANDICAM SETUP YOUTUBE:-

But if OBS:- https://obsproject.com/  being Open Source is just as good or better then I agree and support the effort any Open Source Software and especially through GitHub is great news for gamers.

Thanks! :good:

YEs, OBS used to work a little while ago, but now it can not detect aces.exe - you get desktop audio, but no video. All the other games I play work however.

That is because you forget to add "hook:b=yes" at the top of the config.blk file. Open the config.blk file using any kind of notepad type programs like Notepad++ etc. and put the line on the top of everything. Save and you will be able to do it all.

Sorry mate, but that does not work

"hook:b=yes"

hook:b="yes"

hook:b=yes

None work.

In fact, if you change it the config auto changes it to the last one, regardless, it doesnt work.

Show the proof of what you are actually typing in, maybe make a screenshot and post it here. No proof = You did not try. Because it works flawlessly for me and I make occasional videos on youtube using Bandicam.

I use Radeon Relive. The best I've ever tried.

GPU encoding is fine for local recordings; though you can push much higher qualities/bitrates with OBS.

Sadly I have no idea how to record war thunder on OBS.

I found that I needed to start OBS as administrator, and run WT in fullscreen and it worked. Its to do with the "hooks" which you can not access otherwise.

If you have Windows 10, I use the Xbox Gamebar (Win+G) and its recording feature to record my games. Pretty sure it has nothing to do with Xbox outside of the name. It lets me still record without having a notable FPS drop.
