Please post your Linux system configs. settings and FPS results

Tested this game on Fedora 22 with the latest AMD drivers, same results as on Ubuntu, half the frame rate of the windows version even on Fedora, so I must assume that the linux version has a flaw, or that the linux kernel has some flaw making the game run 50% slower sometimes (100% slower )

I tested the game again, after the update, a slight increase in framerate the game now hovers around 13-20 fps tank battle and 14-25 fps in a plane ( even hitting 30 FPS in some camera angles ) . So if I select plane battles the frame rate is almost as fast as I need. (27-30 FPS )

Tank battle: (I have seen frame rate stuttering, the picture didn't look fluent)
Average fps 51.4
Minimal average fps 42.7
Rating 3144

During benchmarking Rhythmbox was playing a radio stream from HBR1 Dream Factory 64kbps and the Steam client was running.

The only complained is that some times in Random battles, there can be the occassional frame rate stuttering, but mostly not as continues as in the Tank battle benchmark, also there seem to be some problems some times with multi texturing of shadows, fire and decals in the water, where it looks like one halve of a paired square polygon is not rendered properly resulting in saw edges, like when the torpedo's drop from the Catelina in the water with the pacific battles, or some fires on the ships.
Normaly the game runs great though.

System Configuration

Model: Toshiba Satellite M50-A-11L

CPU: i5-4200U

GFX: GeForce GT 740M (GK208, 64-bit memory bus width)

RAM: 8 GiB

OS: Linux 4.1.12 (Gentoo)

System Settings

Since this is an "Optimus" Laptop and I want raw performance beyond the offerings of optirun/bumblebee, I have the nVidia drivers 355.11 powering a seperate X server without compositing and the Intel card is just presenting the rendered image. VSYNC is not possible in this setup (yet). Other than that, I'm using pretty much stock settings.

I am running with old graphics card support, as the game refuses to start without it, on ultra low quality settings. My laptop is below the minimum specifications(1,8 Mhz CPU), so this performance was to be expected. I only play  ground forces. Game runs without issues most of the time and only suffers texture issues on Port Novorossijsk. Sometimes MG/autocanon shells are not shown.

Graphical Settings: 1920x1080 fullcreen, custom settings (all max), vsync off

Eastern Front:
Average FPS: 110.7
Minimal FPS: 79.5

Used 'Work in progress' client 1.61.1.42.

Could this good results be from the i7 core or from the SSD?

I cant use max settings because the FPS drop too much.

I play at 4k, settings on low-medium, with FuryX and latest mesa and kernel 411 I get 30-40fps. Very slow.

Under windows I normally get a smooth 60fps or above, some maps produce 50fps. (this is on high-ultra settings under Win7)

I would say this game has received no love in the perf area for AMD hardware, kinda sad, but we all know Gaijin is VERY pro Nvidia, I'd be surprised if they even have AMD hardware in office. Pretty much forced to play with Old Vid Support, with a furyX. LMAO

Hello The_Riddick,

Have you seen this?

Perhaps it might help with your performance, Also have you tried the AMDGPU drivers? Considering the FuryX is supported by them.

Even though the AMD mesa driver has improved a lot recently there is still a bit of a gap between Linux vs Windows, There is a fairly decent gap between OpenGL and DX11 performance wise, Always has been. As seen here:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux-windows-relperf&num=1

So I don't think you can say it's all the games fault, Really.

I will give that a go cheers, also I found another reason for the performance issue. Turns out Vsync OFF doesn't work and you must do this to make sure its off, then you get a good 20fps boost at 4k. Not sure how to turn on threadedGl yet.

I made a non-steam game link inside my steam with this as the target. I'm not sure if setting it on the default launcher will actually work as that links to the aces file afterwards. (might with export vblank_mode=0 %command%)?

vblank_mode=0  "/run/media/theriddick/MassStorage/InstalledGames/SteamLinux/steamapps/common/War Thunder/aces"

UPDATE: mesa-git causes a black-screen issue for me atm when I move to it. So I will need to wait until it arrives in the manjaro -unstable or -testing branches. Hopefully within another week or two.

Unfortunately mesa-git repository causes KDE to black screen for me, and that is using unstable repo as recommended for it. No idea how to resolve that but at least I figured out howto revert back to mesa 17.05/6

I have got Linux4.12 on now however.

UPDATE: Ok installed antergos as it allowed for easily upgrades. Using kernel 4.11 and Mesa17.1 atm with threaded gl enabled. I'm assuming it works, can't really notice any difference yet. Also is it possible the game is using OGL3 and not OGL4.5? according to my window it says OGL3.

Ok managed to get 50-61 fps now, by running game in terminal for testing I set the following.

env MESA_GLSL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=450

env MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=4.5

env mesa_glthread=true

env vblank_mode=1

Don't ask me why but when vblank is set to 1 I get a extra 5fps. Also I don't think Warthunder is caring about the GL profile settings as the window shows up as OpenGL3, 64bit again. It really should be detecting a higher OGL version, or perhaps that is a byproduct of KDE compositor? I really have no idea.

You can probably set all this in the steam launch options, but I wasn't able to verify that it was working, so did it the terminal route just to be sure I was getting those environment overrides set. As of this moment I cannot determine if glthreading does anything at all, and if the game is forcing itself into OGL3 mode somehow? then it certainly won't work.

some system spec info:

AntergOS 17.5 (testing enabled)

Kernel4.11e1(hardened), Mesa17.1(testing branch)

Videocard: FuryX (amdgpu) @ 4k (mixture of settings, med-high on average)

CPU: 5820k @ 4.2ghz, DRAM: [email protected]

Game HDD: 7200rpm external, good enough for this game.

My recommendation for Gaijin is to switch to Vulkan API ASAP, it will resolve many issues across ALL the platforms this game runs on. Keeping OGL4.1 for legacy MacOS support obviously. (there is a Vulkan to Metal conversion tools now btw ;) ), and yes PS4+ can run Vulkan. EVEN the Nintendo Switch will run Vulkan, so there's a new market for Gaijin if their game!

PS. I experience a red flash for 3 at start of game or in certain light (lasts 1ms) and there was certain maps causing a hole in the clouds.

Ok Good to see you have improved your performance a bit.

War Thunder to my knowledge only uses OpenGL 3, Hence it says "OpenGL3" in the title bar, For higher compatibility with older GPUs. After all the Linux client was released in 2014.

As for some of the other issues you have mentioned, If you believe you have found a bug with the game then please do submit a report on it.

I don't really play this game anymore, so I'm not really gonna bother with further bug reporting.

With everything on high settings at 4k I get 30fps (test drive mode), setting resolution down to 1080p gives me a extra 10fps... Yeah unless this game has some major revolution with Linux then I won't be visiting it again anytime soon, except for occasional benchmark results.

At one point I got 70-80fps at medium settings but it was mostly a illusion because the minimal fps was quite terrible and half the maps would drop my fps down to 30-40fps for no reason, sometimes getting the exact same map in a row would yield different fps results. I made sure my videocard wasn't down-clocking, its just the Linux client isn't very good for AMD users IMO, unless you enjoy ~30fps, I don't.
