The Kawasaki Ki-64 was a prototype of an experimental heavy, single seat, fighter. It had two unusual design features. First; it had two Kawasaki Ha-40 engines in tandem; one in the aircraft nose, the other behind the cockpit, both being connected by a drive shaft. They drove two, three-bladed, contra-rotating propellers. The second feature was the use of the wing surface as a radiator for the water-cooled engines. The aircraft first flew in December 1943. During the fifth flight, the rear engine caught fire; and while the aircraft made an emergency landing, it was damaged. The aircraft was subsequently abandoned in mid-1944 in favour of more promising projects. The airframe survived the war, and parts of the unique cooling system were sent to Wright Field for examination.

You have my yes! It flew enough times for enough flight data to be available, and would be a nice addition, as with all Japanese aircraft :salute:

I always get confused when I see this mentioned.. I just think of the already in-game Ki-61's. Anyway...

Yes, of course I'd love to see this. Even though I haven't played Japan a whole lot, I have seen (through U.S. / USSR play) that it really struggles in later tiers. Something should be done and, if that means adding tested Prototypes, then I'm all for it so long as it doesn't make a precedent and people start suggesting Paper Planes / Tanks that only had mock-ups built.

Struggle in later tiers? ATM the Hayate Ko dominates de tier III (Maybe thats why they will move it to 4), the Otsu and Hei have no problem with Spits 22/24. Bearcats or even La-9s Yak-9s. P-80s with the current FM its not an impossible challenge, the only real opponent is the F-80C (And maybe the Meteor F3), but 50% of the american jet teams of F-80C prefer to head-on the Shidens and Hayates or make an crucial mistake on energy and get killed fairly easily.

Paper planes is conjecture to debate. Higher tier aircraft for Japan and Germany should be allowed paper planes to a certain degree. Its a necessary, and people will have to accept that the two countries will need planes of such in order to compete with postwar aircraft.

Actually serial-produced version should have had 2800 HP engine and max speed of 800 km/h, it should also have had both variable pitch props (instead of prototype's one variable and one fixed pitch prop) and be armed with 4xHo-5 guns.

Fun fact the Cooling system was ready before the Ki-64 Prototype was so they put it on a Ki-61 (otsu with the late modifications I believe, I don't subscribe to Gaijin's naming practices it's A (Ko) B(Otsu) Kai C(Hei) Kai D(Tei) the Ko and Otsu's would replace their wing guns with 20mm mausers the kai C had to remain viable)

downside to the whole system is if someone took out your flaps. they'd take out your cooling system.

It seems the community has spoken.

So far, 53 votes in favor of it being added and 3 against it (and as the 3 who voted against it didn't state their reasons why, we can simply assume they're just trolls whose opinions should be considered invalid).
