Russian Q&A


Q: A lot of questions are raised by how matchmaker works and how battle rating is assigned for some of the vehicles. For example, planes with 1 BR difference fighting against each other. We would like you to share your opinion in this regard.

 

A: You need to understand two very important points:

  • Firstly the matchmaker is limited to the selection of the vehicles that are already queued for the battle and if in one queue you have 20 planes with BR of 4 and in another queue 10 planes with BR of 3, then in Realistic and Simulator battles matchmaker won’t be able to make an optimal team setup (its easier in AB of course), so this is the reason of the most of the heavy-differences in BR matches - they are there because of the imbalance in the queue that happened in the first place.

  • Secondly, the BR of the vehicle itself. You should understand that two planes with same BR doesn’t mean that they actually equal each other in every way - they may be very different and also they may be different by their battle role (fighter, attacker and bomber with the same BR, for example).

Battle Rating is, for the most part, a battle efficiency of that vehicle. That is why aircraft with amazing armament but high BR may easily lose a battle against more manoeuvrable aircraft with lower BR.

 

Reward bonus and repair prices are the corrections on how often a vehicle gets destroyed in battle and how many enemies it manages to take down during that time.


Q: Are you planning to implement radar equipment for aviation and ground forces?


A: There are no plans for it in the near future, although we are looking at the possibility to use this equipment in combat on the current implementation of our battles, but its too early to discuss it in detail, though.


Q: With the implementation of the ground forces I have an issue with not having enough free space and with preparations of the vehicles going in to the battle (I have more than one setup that I love to play with), will you implement some way to make a vehicle pre-sets or maybe you will change how hangar works altogether?


A: We are planning to introduce the ability to save your vehicle pre-sets, but we are also discussing other ways to solve that inconvenience so plans may change.


Q: Are you planning to publish the documents that you use to tune ground vehicles in game? And why in one of the patches Sherman’s fire rate got changed?


A: Sherman fire rate change is just a fix of mistaken data, the fire rate taken are ‘combat ones’ (in the Sherman's case it was technical rate of fire of the weapon without crew influence included).


We of course will be highlighting all changes and updates in the patch notes and developer blog.


Q: Tell us about the change with kill credits, when a kill wouldn’t count right away for a  torn away wing and will credit only when vehicle has crashed and got destroyed that way.


A: The cases when an aircraft was shot down like that but was able to land on an allied airfield and get repaired or would shoot down someone else while flying back to airfield were not uncommon.


We are using a more precise system of losses, since we always know when the airplane got destroyed and is unable to be repaired, so we are excluding odd cases when player would continue to fly after he would be counted down as destroyed.


In short - if plane can be repaired, it won’t be counted as destroyed.


Q: What is a readiness status of USSR and Germany tank trees and when should we expect USA tree?


A: We are already working on USA tree and we hope we will manage to release it this year. We even have full models ready and, maybe, we will show them on the developer blog.


We have trees as well, right now our artists are working on aviation tech trees (graphically made tech trees for presentation), and then we will publish tank trees as well.


Q: Will we have the IL-28?


A: Yes, it even flies and waits for something to balance it out in USA, Britain and the rest of the countries. We hope you will see them soon :)


Q: Are you working on the visibility of the tanks through obstacles from third-person view? What percentage of the tanks are fully tuned? What vehicles will you implement other than those that are listed in release trees?


A: We are expecting US first, we will show it to you soon. Release trees of the vehicles will be updated after we will update aircraft release trees. Generally all ground vehicles are already tuned, but we possibly will add missing details. All possible incorrect data that is present right now will be treated as mistakes and will be fixed if there are documents that prove that current data is not correct - we are ready to look into those. About the shooting through obstacles from third-person view - there are errors that we will be fixing, of course.


Q: We don’t need more than 8 players for tactical game in tank SB.


A: It is too early to talk about it, implementation of the combined battles changes game play and tactics. Also, small amount of players on huge maps will have difficulties finding each other.


Q: What happens with skill when you have two crew members of same speciality in a tank (for example, two loaders)?


A: One skill will be assigned for both. In the crews where one member does several tasks at the same time, improving all those skills will have influence on him.


Q: Are there any plans for a Linux version of the game?


A: There are some plans, yes.


Q: Have you abandoned the idea about re-spawn points mode from CBT?


A: We will come to it later after additional work and tests on it.


Q: What is happening in regards to shell interaction with trees and other objects.


A: The real question is optimization of that for weaker PCs, the task is high priority right now.


Q: How does the game determine when to start the actual battle when you joined one? Does it start after a certain time or after a certain amount of players have loaded in?


A: We give players 30 seconds on load and about 15 seconds countdown before the game starts.


Q: What are current tank statistics? When should we expect first fixes in BR?


A: We cannot state any date yet. There are imbalances in both vehicles and maps. For map balance we possibly will remove the side spawn assignments for countries. We most likely will lower BR for heavy tanks and increase it in the early t-34 and Sherman.


Q: After 1.39 we got imbalance in favour of the bombers and their gunners. It is especially noticeable in SB.


A: Gunners and Damage Model wasn’t changed. Maybe there are some parameters that we haven’t counted in. We plan clarification of the bomber DM to exclude odd situations like that.


Q: Are errors in trimming a priority?


A: We are working on it, yes.


Q: Are you going to fix longer repair time for the tanks? Will you change DM of the tanks to make them survive more?


A: Long repair time is an error after crew got injured and it will be fixed. Maybe, after getting a lot of damage you will be suggested to leave the vehicle.


About increasing the lifespan of the vehicles, maybe we will decrease chance of ammo-rack explosion. Right now almost every hit is guaranteed explosion.


Q: What anti-air vehicles are you planning to implement especially for 4-5 ranks?


A: In the next major update we maybe will add anti-air for both USSR and Germany. For USSR - around 3 vehicles, for Germany - around 4. On high ranks we planning, for example, ZSU 57-2 for USSR, which even though slightly out from the time frame, still are in game technical era. For Germany we may add Flakpanzer V on Panther chassis, for example.


Q: Will you implement 1v1, 2v2, 4v4 event duels in AB and RB with personal battle rating like in squadrons?


A: No we won’t, since efficiency will be depending from randomly selected players then.


International Q&A


Will the 3rd Person View (Commander View) in Tank Simulator Combat remain in its current state as the game develops? You can still shoot while in 3rd Person view. This somewhat ruins the immersion of a simulator environment – especially for two-seat tanks.

 

We are not planning to remove the ability to fire from commander view as of now, as it would make the game significantly harder to play.

 

As an example: In real life, the commander would be able to give orders to his gunner while looking for enemies, so there is cooperation and communication between crew members. In War Thunder, you are representing the entire crew of the vehicle, so you pointing the turret and shooting using the commander view is simulating this cooperation that is happening in real tanks. As you can see, our approach is different from other games, where they want you to cooperate with other players in the same vehicle, which is why it would make the game a lot harder to play if we would take certain abilities from certain positions.

 

Since there will be no multi-crew functionality (controlling the same tank with multiple players) in War Thunder any time in the near future, we will stick to this approach at least for now.


Why is the ‘sniper view’ in ground forces not located alongside the barrel, where it should be?


Currently, the sniper view is centred along the line of the barrel, to make it easier for the player to understand where his projectile will hit. We know that it this positioning is not historically correct and we will look into it in the future.


Have you looked into the discrepancy of the match maker and Battle Ratings? As of 1.41 some planes (P-63 A-10 for example) are matched against planes much more inferior to them, creating unbalance.

 

The matchmaker and Battle Ratings are changed often and continuously being adjusted. So the answer is yes: We are looking into it to ensure the game remains balanced. BRs are also impacted by player performance according to our statistics – its not static number.

 

You should also bear in mind that flight model adjustments for aircraft also have a major impact on the battle rating of some aircraft. As more information is collected about specific models, their battle ratings will be adjusted accordingly.


Planes with the same BR rating doesn't necessarily mean, that they should face similar performance aircraft, its a wrong assumption – BR means average effectiveness of players actions on certain plane, not just planes performance.

 

Some aircraft are not in fair positions, as there are still gaps in trees. Alternatively, mixed battles (When all factions are matched against one another), are another option we are considering to improve game balance and reduce queue times, as has been tested in the past.

 

According to historians, there was not a single one report in WW2 of a tank being shot in the transmissions and fire starting in the tanks. Is it possible that this an oversight by the developers?

 

Transmission being shot and set on fire is possible according to our sources. Usually due to how volatile the hydraulic oil can be.

 

You've introduced a new premium plane (Hs 129 B-2) that is identical to the other one. Are you planning to reveal us more of these planes by updating the release tree?

 

Yes, we are planning to release more of these planes and update the release tree in next few weeks.

 

Can we get the Tiger P in the game as we already saw some „rare“ tanks implemented? When do you plan to implement coaxial & AA guns?

 

Yes! Tiger P may be a premium tank. We are currently working on coaxial guns are we will try to bring it soon to the game.


Do you plan to publish complex game statistics? You always refer to them, when you make changes. Like average income, % of win/losses etc.

 

No, there is reason to not show it. Those are difficult data to read and not always clear. You have to know how to use them and showing them would allow players to make the wrong assumptions.

 

How's the progress on bomber cockpit development?

 

Admittedly, bomber cockpits are quite complicated to create, Fortunately, progress is going well, and we are planning to even release a tool to help users create cockpits too.

When we have something ready we will make a post about it, so stay tuned!

 

Are there plans for a colorblind mode?

 

Yes, we are currently working on it right now.

 

Is the rate of fire of cannons on tanks historically accurate? Is it measured by the time it takes for a loader to load a shell or some sort of documents?

 

The reload time on cannons is based on our research, varying between documents that simply line out the reload time of a cannon, average reload time by the crew and so. We make sure that the reload time and all other stats are true to their historical counterparts.

 

Will the accuracy of the Kwk 43 be increased? According to historical documents, it isn't firing accurately at 1000 meters as it should as the spread is too big.

 

The vertical spread on this cannon currently in the game is 52 centimetres to 1000 meters and the horizontal spread is 38 centimeters to 1000 meters when the tank is fully researched. It should be relatively accurate at 1000 meters. We will review this cannon to be sure.

 

We have a huge problem with bombers in Simulator Battles (they have no cockpit and got a 3d view with the gunners and are very durable), especially with strategic bombers such as the B-17 and B-24. Are you planning to fix this?

 

There were not any positive changes in accuracy of gunners nor DM of bombers in last few patches. In the nearest future we are planning to implement some changes to the damage model of heavy bombers, which will get them closer to reality. The B-17s for example will receive an update to their damage model, as historically even the Japanese A6M Zeroes were able to shoot them down, although with some effort. They however should not be invincible.


It should also be noted that this damage model update will not be applied just for bombers, but ALL planes in the game. All guns, especially large caliber guns will also have a much higher efficiency and impact on the performance of a plane that is hit by them and the damage they can cause.

 

You've recently released a duel event for Simulator Battles. It was interesting, but it was flooded with bombers. Is it possible to make the gunners in first person view for bombers?

 

Not at this time, and not necessarily in first person view, but changes to the way the gunner view is working will be made (it will be less comfortable).

 

We have several sub nations in the trees, such as the Italians and Australians. Are there plans to expand those trees with more minor nations such as the French?

 

Yes, and we may even separate the Italian tree into its own tech tree. Other nations may be unique for specific branches but we haven't decided on that yet. But we will first finish work on the first 5 nations.


For GF, USA comes first, then British and Japanese tanks. After this we might add some other models into existing trees. For Italian tree – there might be some issues with high-tier vehicles. We will keep you informed.

 

As of patch 1.37 and 1.39, guns like the .50 cals seems to be doing too much damage, while german guns like the 30mm cannons do almost nothing. Can it be fixed?

 

You cannot always compare planes with more weapons (or bigger size of gun) as more effective. Different shells react differently on various material. Also effective range vary.

 

The repair system currently implemented for tanks doesn't seem to fit in with the game. Are there plans to change it?

 

We are not planning to change the whole mechanic of repair of the tanks, but we are planning to adjust it and fix any possible bugs in it (huge repair times, damage to your barrel, chance to blow yourself up and not being able to fix it).

 

Last patch you introduced control stiffening for the A6M2 and A6M3. Why have it been removed?

 

It was inaccurately implemented. Elevator control stiffening for example was too excessive than it should be. We are re-evaluating these planes and adjusting their flight models to their accurate settings.

 

Is game balance the reason full black and red outs aren't implemented in the game?

 

We have considered to implement full blackouts and red outs that put the pilot into unconsciousness, but they can drastically change the gameplay, which is why we are still considering how they should function in the game if they are included.

 

Has anything changed with the IL-28 and B-29 release plans? Previously you stated they were not included due to balance.

 

We have delayed their release as we are waiting to release planes that are capable of matching against these two bombers. We want them, but right now we cannot add them.


They are not only capable as good bombers, but also well protected and could create massive unbalance.


Friendly aircraft in replays appear in very low resolution next to you, even though graphic settings have been bumped up to the maximum. Why does it happen?

 

It's a bug and it has been reported. We're looking into it.

 

Is gradual armour weakening planned to be implemented? As in, the first will not penetrate, but the one after it will have an increased chance due to the wear of the armour, with more shells hitting increasing the chance for penetration.

 

That is already in the game for some vehicles and their parts. The Pz III with additional armour screens for example, if the armour screen is shot with 2 shells of 76mm cannon, it can be destroyed. We will continue in adding it.

 

Gun depression/elevation on certain tanks is inaccurate. Is it bug?

 

It depends on exact data, some model of tank can have different de/ev values than its previous sub-model. We will be able to look into the issue, if you send us exact documentation.

 

The German CL-13 Sabre is from 1955, beyond the time line of the game. Is this plane the only exception for that or will you add more aircraft such as the Hawker Hunter and Supermarine Swift?

 

This plane will be the only exclusion due to balance reasons. We are not planning to increase the game's current time line.


We hope that when we publish the updated tech tree, most of your questions and concerns about the direction of the game will be answered.

 

Is there any possibility of seeing the Maus in game? Because it was built and used.

 

The problem with the Maus is the balance in the game. If the Maus is introduced, we will have a similar situation with the MiG 15 and Saber, where some nations cannot compete.

 

Only very powerful tanks could be capable of penetrating it from the front.


Its not just about the tank itself, but about how players will use it. In right hands, nobody could compete in some situation.

 

Armoured cars in future?


Most probably, yes.

 

Do you plan to make it possible to disable the damage log? It fills quite a huge part of your screen and it might be annoying.

 

We know this can be annoying, unfortunately we cannot answer when and how it will be changed. On the other hand, the interface is liable to change.

 

Regarding the battle ratings - Can you, instead of basing the Battle Ratings on player efficiency, to instead base them on in-game performance and historical performance? As in, get an average of both rating from both.

 

A full historical balance is unachievable, however we are considering other ways to balance the game.

 

Squad battles have no matchmaking at this time. Are there plans to implement one?

 

Yes. Squad battles are under constant work.

 

Will in the future, we will be able to fight with tanks in urban environments? (Towns, cities)

 

Yes, we will make city maps in the future. Building and more environment will be destructible, we are currently working on that.

 

Will the MiG 17 be implemented? Currently the MiG 15 is quite inferior to the Sabres.


Currently, no. If we feel that its presence in the game is required to achieve proper balance, we may consider to include it in the game.


H6K - Will there be a day when it will be unable to complete eternal loops and turn without losing speed and altitude?


Yes!


When will the M.C 202 Folgore receive a new Flight Model? Currently is it inferior to planes of comparable performance historically.


Very Soon™!


Besides the M.C 202, most of the other Italian planes have disastrous flight models, especially the G.50 and its wrong ammo count. Are those problems known?


Yes they are and they will be rectified as Soon™ as possible.


Will there be battle rating adjustments for late war German Jets (In particular, 262s) due to the release of the CL.13 and MiG 15bis for the German tree.


There will be changes, yes. They are more likely to compete with late and post war jets of comparable performance.


The Me 163 has been in the game for a while and it still doesn't have a proper take off and landing procedure. Are there any sort of advances in regarding to the 163?


Yes, this problem is well known and we wanted to release a fix in the last patch but we sadly failed to implement it in time. It should be dealt with in the next upcoming patch.


The only Jet Bomber right now is the Arado 234 B-2 which is very slow and Soon™ hopefully the IL-28 will show up. Are all jet bombers will be this slow or they will be fast?


Depending on their performance, jet bombers can be faster than they may seem to be due to their role. We will make sure they will perform as accurate as possible and will adjust their ratings to balance them up.

bombers bomb the Maus, there invincibility fixed! Also how do you see germany tier 5 tanks being balanced now? its a slaughterfest over there. the only decent tank is the JT and even then. Panther 2 and Kwk 46 are just fodder. i would really really for the love of god like a response.

i see no reason not to, most of my deaths in the IS4M are from Ju-87s and Do-217s anyways

Yes, this problem is well known and we wanted to release a fix in the last patch but we sadly failed to implement it in time. It should be deas accurate as possible and will adjust their ratings to balance them up.

 

 

 

Nice, but fixing the BR of it would be even better.

Sometimes I think it would be benificial to the game if the people making the decisions would actually know both sides of what they are changing. Because it seems they never do.

It should also be noted that this damage model update will not be applied just for bombers, but ALL planes in the game. All guns, especially large caliber guns will also have a much higher efficiency and impact on the performance of a plane that is hit by them and the damage they can cause. <-- yay, so the ttk in arcade from 0,000001 sec will go to 0,000000000000000001 ... yes.. even faster deaths in a mode with perfect aim is so much fun.

Only 2 maus were made 1 was operational but never was in combat the other only had the hull made, so i see no problem in adding it specially when gaijin is so towards low production number planes (F86-F2 (only 12 made 6 in combat 2 shot down), Me 262 C1, C2(only 1 made of each), Ho 229 (3 made 2 operational but never in combat) that will be added Soon™™™™).

 

inb4 IS-7 bcuz why not...

 

I also notice alot of awnsers to questions like the maus and il-28 and b-29 and not implemented yet beeing " cuz of balance yo", is that why Me 262s have such a high BR that its about to fight F16s in Iraq?

 

Then the excuse is that "the BR system is automated, its out of our power please wait till next patch to fix" just to find that in the next patch the BR got even higher on German Jets and American props and superbly undertiered... (the fact most important thing in the game that sohuld be man controlled is not.... oko then) well if its automated it must automated for "bige gune = bigger fite", either make it update plane BR in a weekly basis instead of a 4 month basis (normal time that a patch takes to be released)...

 

Its amazing how devs cant see how failure the BR system is compared to the 20 level system after so many threads and topics were made and closed and deleted (oh wait i think thats the problem)...

 

And another thing like the KV-2 from 1939 fighting 1942 and higher tanks. ("New level system is based by year" well it seems not) Yes it has a 152mm gun and yes it 1 hit kills everything, but it has crappy armor and it can easly be killed by a Pz38t (ik i killed my share of KV-2s with it), this is another example of bigger gun= higher BR system.

And the KV-1s are pretty over tiered but i think they got their frontal armor ninja buffed so their ok now...

 

I know im ranting but i also know i right but this will end up beeing ignored by them anyway.

 

PS: Sry for big rant post i just had to get it out of my system.

- all the produced MAUS didnt have a working turret

German complaining about not having any tank in korean war , well no shit ! its like the PLANES , instead of dealing with it and asking gaijin to put a WW2 / Korean lock (like they did before 1.37) you guys gets a 1957 CL13a ))) enjoy

Yepp, it is a crappy tank. However: Germany is the only nnation right now that is facing the already implemented Korean War Tanks.

AND DUDE! WE HAD LIKE 20 SUGGESTIONS FOR KOREAN WAR LOCK. But nope...

We asked for those locks over and over again but Allies would never let a Me262 fight what it fought.

 

And a Maus was certainly more real than the 105mm tiger or panther 2 which are just fantasy.

Only 2 maus were made 1 was operational but never was in combat the other only had the hull made, so i see no problem in adding it specially when gaijin is so towards low production number planes (F86-F2 (only 12 made 6 in combat 2 shot down), Me 262 C1, C2(only 1 made of each), Ho 229 (3 made 2 operational but never in combat) that will be added Soon™™).

Well.... if the old Q&A is still accurate, we can expect the T-10 and possibly T-10M heavy tanks too .-.

 

Personally i think locking germany or giving them lend lease tanks would be the better option, but that is also because i hate the maus('s aesthetics). And its terribly slow. :3

did the panther 2 turret even exist? , TBH where's the problem about ME 262 vs B17/P51? with its current FM why would they complain , i know alot of people who actually want this but gaijin decided to (randomly) remove it from 1.37 update :( (this applyed only to the Sabres and not the F9F/F80 tho) since USA has now a WW2 jet (P80) it would make more sense to lock it to WW2 only

So basically, BR isn't related to plane performance at all, but it's the primary tool used to match planes to similarly performing planes...
