Bombing Bases

20 posts in this topic

Ok, so I'm a newb and I can't figure out how to bomb a base. I've tried bombing the runways and I've tried the buildings. Nothing seems to work and I get chickenscratch for cash and xp, maybe 10-15. I spent nearly 15 whole minutes bombing the shinolla out of an enemy base with 250kg bombs and was rewarded with 155xp for my efforts. The base seems to have something like a health meter and it barely moved. Maybe 5%.

What am I doing wrong?

250kgs have no effect

 you need 500kgs/1000lbs and higher

It takes something like 16,000 kg worth of bombs. I'm not sure the exact number, but it takes a fair few passes even with the heaviest bombers.

I heard in another topic that it is 18.000KG or almost 40.000LBS

and still, the question is the same, you should aim for the runway or for the buildings?

and a question of my own, if you are in a battle where you have to capture airfields, is it useless to bomb am airfield held by the other team?

So... several heavy bombers then....

Well, that explains it.

Or you could, you know, get a Yer-2 with its massive array of giant bombs?

It takes exactly 16,500 kg 15,000kg of high explosive to destroy a base. Target and hit the runway with at least 100kg (250lb) bombs. No 50kg bombs.

There's a thread called "How many bombs per targget needed?" (spelled just like that),  which has a list by P_H_ Clostermann, that has all the targets and what bombs to use.

Look at me being helpful!  :Ps

Thanks for that, I was trying to describe to a friend that flying over the base in his single engine fighter and dropping a few 45kg bombs on it wasn't gonna get much done.

I just watched a video where a guy bombed a base and destroyed it with 15,000kg of bombs (15x1000kg). The video is in the flight academy section.

It scales on bomb size, it's may take 15 1000kg bombs to destroy it, but then 42 500kg bombs (21,000 kg worth) and even more weight of 250 kg bombs to destroy it. Because of that,  I never go for airfield with anything less than 500 kg, it's a waste of time with anything less.

They changed the amount of bombs it takes (made it higher).  It used to be 24K back in December but with 1.33 it's now more.

You want to take a few friends with you in bombers with BIG bombs and preferably with cloud\fog cover over the airfield so they cannot see you.  It's gonna take many passes and it's VERY dangerous.  Good luck.

The efficient way to destroy a base is with the 1000kg bomb, carrying at least 2 payloads if you're alone like the H6K4. More bombers joining the attack, the faster it will be destroyed. Otherwise the game will be over before you can destroy the enemy base. It takes alot of bombing runs even with the heaviest bombs.

One more thing is to get as high altitude as possible, above 5000m. The airfield is big place so accuracy is not a problem. Your chance of survival from enemy fighters & AAA will be better, though the latter depends on luck.

My squad specializes in B-17 formations and bombing the base and I can tell you that 6 B-17s fully loaded with 8x 1000lbers are needed to take it out. 5 gets really close but 6 is needed.
