Pros and cons

27 posts in this topic

Hey guys, so I'm pretty new to war thunder. I started playing with America and liked it, but as I played more, I started to wonder about other nations. I haven't played much of other nations because I only want to focus on one. I was wondering if you guys could tell me the pros and cons of each nation. Thanks!

Russia has the best bombers in the game, so if you want to bomb, play Russia.

Russian reserve planes can also be fitted with 2 bombs each where most other nations reserves have no options at all - and that's helpful for the Ground Strike matches [assuming you don't get rammed in the face on the way to the other side of the map first].  Some ground targets like Pillboxes and the larger Tanks can't be destroyed unless you bomb them.

Japanese rank 0 F1m2 can also be fitted with bombs. However on Ranks 0 and 1, there is no good armament for ANY reserve plane that would do good vs hard targets, and in arcade battles, the game is usually over since one team has ran out of aircraft, unless there is a Premium Bomber involved.

Anyway, you can easily play all nations to tier 6, while doing 5-6 arcade games day. Look on youtube for WT videos and fighting techniques in general: Boom and Zoom, Rope a Dope, Turn and Burn, Energy Fighting, Dive Bombing, Level Bombing - all good key words. A good video is way more useful than assuming what is written on the forums is the absolute truth.

Enjoy the game - it is awesome (true story)!

Yep, sorry that was actually two separate thoughts.  I brought up the hard targets because he said he was new, and I'm guessing he's been strafing those things with the American pea shooters wondering WTF (like me... until today).  Encyclopedia has some details on what kills what.  My fav thing to bomb with the Russian reserve planes is dudes trying to cap my team's airfield.  [6-minute reload time kinda sucks though].

My opinion (up to rank 10 mostly, I don't really have the necessary twitch reflexes to go beyound with my current practice. I'm feeling ahead, though, gently and cautiously...)

USA: .50cal rulez. 20mm? pah! we got 37mm! And bombs, bombs, bombs...

  • - Fighter: Take patience, most will get you a lot of assists and few kills, the 'cobras get you a few more kills and a a lot less assists.
  • - Bomber: Few of them but those do a decent job. Good-ish payload, mostly acceptable handling and sturdiness.

Germany: The hightech specialists

  • - Fighter: PITA initially, on rank 6 you get your first Bf 109. From then on they're the best in Boom'n'Zoom, fastest, good damage,...  ...until it's jet time, as I hear. The heavies are decent, but suffer in relation to their competitors from having a realistic flight model. Takes some adaption, then they're decent bomber killers.
  • - Bomber: Level bombers are cursed with consisting of 90% elevator and rudder and 10% pilot (hit area-wise). Stukas are a crappy compromise, but fun to play, unless someone starts to shoot a you. Then there's the next Stuka in your lineup.

USSR: Workers' and peasants' planes, simple, easy to use, robust, well tooled. No need and llittle room for finesse.

  • - Fighters: High damage dealers, Biplanes have remote-chainsaw MGs, later they're trading off robustness vs. agility. straightforward aproach - dive, boom, and sing "The Internationale" or "Rodina", either to celebrate or instead of praying.
  • - Bombers: A weird and crazy mix of low rank bombers is IMHO the best part of the Russian tech tree - dive, boom, and sing "The Internationale" or "Rodina", either to celebrate or instead of praying. But with skilled gunners some do extremely well moonlighting as gunships. Disposables, as you can field up to 8 on rank 3. SBs crazy agile for such a large plane, BB-1/Su-2 have 4 forward MGs and can moonlight as fighters. later less spread, but they're less rank-sensitive than the fighters.

Britain: Rule, Hispano, Hispano rule the skies! Guns, guns, guns... ...flying in circles.

  • - Fighters: Hurries and Spits. Turn and burn. Hispano rulez, especially the quad Hipano planes. Quad Hispano Beaufighters fly like the russian single fighters (currently, and the higher two are less UFOid), not like heavies. Agility and gunpower traded vs speed until rank 10 or 12. Pro tip: spend those Golden Eagles and buy the Boomerangs. Those two 'roo planes are really OP!!!
  • - Bombers: Nice until rank 3. Then comes pain, in the guise of the flying tent named "Wellington". Oh, apart from torpedo bombers - those are called "Beaufighter"...  ...s.a.

Japan: Turn and burn - on both ends of the shooting process. Origami rice paper with incendium skin finish. Otherwise great.

  • - Fighters: A lot of fun to play - until someone shoots in your general direction. Then the machine goes full christmas tree disaster. AxMx are great turners, the Ki-xx single fighters are also B'n'Z capable, but a bit undergunned. Heavies have weird weaponry layouts, but are even more agile than the Beaufighters - in this case that's their saving grace. Overall the low on board ammo ammounts can be annoying.
  • - Bombers: A bit less ignition-prone, but only a bit. otherwise decent bombers. Special mention to the H6K4 "Cucumber-zilla", the flying battlecruiser of rank 3, with which a lot of fun can be had.

Everybody feel free to disagree...

Japanese dosent have a Powerful Engine nor a Weak Engine...

Japanese Cant Chase your only choice is wait for a fighter to dive at you or approach you "Beat him" in a turning Dogfight...

Thats it.

your only Planes are   the

AxMx Series. but 120 rounds of 20mm cannons? O_O  you cant burst... you have to pinpoint your target... or else you will loose when you reload

other planes lack.. fire power

The Blenheim and then the Beaufort especially.. was the first bomber I enjoyed out of all the nations.  I disliked the Wellingtons at first but over time became better with them.  Sort of learning to compensate for the weaknesses and learning to be accurate while diving.  It was harder.. and took more time.. compared to the Russian or Jap bombers for example.  That's just me.

Bombers - They are all good IMO.  Just have different strengths and weaknesses.  USA and japan and Russian are my faves these days, in tiers 6-11.  In earlier tiers I enjoyed Germany and Brit.

Dog fighters and turning - Japanese and Brits.. and Russians can do ok as well.

Boom and zoom - USA and Germany.

Versatile - USA but especially Russia.

Firepower (cannons) - Everyone except USA.. but 50 cals can be deadly.. they are just harder to use.. and you need to manage other factors like convergance, shell types, flying style etc.

Ability to take damage - It's strange, I don't notice much difference between nations.. it seems more random.  Zeros are supposed to take less damage but they seem to take a bit (for me).  It's more about certain planes that stand out as taking more damage.  It's complicated.  I don't get the impression that some nations take more damage than others.  Just depends on random factors like the shell type, the size and how many times you get hit.  The Beaufighter can take a lot of damage but that doesn't mean that all Brit planes take a lot of damage.  Most bombers can take a lot of damage.. unless it's 37mm cannon or lucky shots onto the elevator.

And when you have the 1000kg bombs, go high(like 6km high), kill 2-3 idiots on you way to their base, and bomb the living daylights out of the runway for epic win  :bomber:

Wellingtons are decent level bombers. Not spectacular, but if you learn to use that 4000lb bomb, you can earn quite a lot as long as you NEVER come down. Fly as high as you can....

For tanks, the best to start out with is definitely british. The 2 reserve tanks are really good. I have killed tier 3 tanks with them. so starting out, british. for tier 3 tanks and beyond, germany.

Don't worry about which is best/easiest to play - play them all, then you will know first hand their good and bad points and knowing your enemy helps your combat skills immeasurably.

Disagree.  FW 190 is a great BNZ aircraft with an outstanding roll rate (very similar to P63).  Cannon-armed Bf109 is a good all round fighter.  It has a decent climb rate and some use it for BNZ, but you can also turnfight with it.  It won't out-turn a Japanese plane but it is almost as good as a Spitfire or Hurricane.  The G model is a great bomber killer, just as dangerous as the Yak9 and P63.
